The Bush/killdeer incident was when he was running against Ann Richards for governor of Texas. Richards is a lifetime hunter, and it was beginning to look in the papers as though she was more "macho" than George. So Rove set up a dove hunting trip for Bush. Bush promptly mistook a killdeer for a dove and killed it.

I had never seen this one. I think it is an optical illusion (giving the thumbs up but shot at a weird angle)

1. I'd forgotten the Killdeer episode

I thought at the time that would spell the end of that miserable son of babs. Sigh, I loved living in TX, but there were some mighty odd folk to have to put up with.

2. And Killdeer and Doves look nothing alike in flight.

Killdeer look like (to me anyway) like tiny Pteradactyls in flight and are far slower than Doves. Doves have powerful wingbeats and can really move when they need to.

Of course, Bush would have shot the bird anyway, despite better intelligence.
