Why are the people not storming the gates? Is there no rope available?

1. There's plenty of rope...
...but there's also plenty of bread, beer and teevee.

experts in the art of distraction. We have every toy and lust imaginable available to distract us from seeing the criminals nailing our balls to the walls.

hardly needed the additional opiates; they were dulled out enough already.

27. At one time religion helped to inspire people to struggle for civil rights
Religion can delude or enlighten...It's all in how it's used.

4. If it were the 60s again, people would be storming the gates
The folks who were active at that time are comfy and soft, as the other posters have noted.

The young folks are going to have to take the initiative and they may not have the fortitude to do so. Sadly, we all know the country is going to hell and very few are doing anything about it.

Miracles do happen and let's pray for one.

18. I don't understand
why people expect "young folks" to take the initiative here. It's going to take people of any age to turn this country around. Anyway, do you really think storming the barricades is the way to go about it in a country where the government will stop at nothing to stop you? You could get seriously hurt that way. There are other ways to fight tyranny.

8. so, are you doing the intensely HARD work of organizing people
TO take to streets? making it possible for them to take that extreme risk and not be standing there alone?

have you shown up at the other attempts others have worked their butts off trying to make happen??

there are numerous organizations pleading for volunteers in such efforts as general strike, etc..
maybe you wold volunteer to do some of the grunt work with the rest of us?

thank you for the sentiment. i hope you will pour that passion into organizing and manifesting!

peace!

19. This may help you understand. . .
Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky: "The Grand Inquisitor" (Chapter 5 of The Brothers Karamazov)

Simply put, freedom's difficult, comfort can trump, and issues of moral import and social differentiation cause brain implosions in the many . . .

Enjoy (or whatever passes for it in these interesting times). . .

20. I know of what you speak. But my arthritis won't cooperate.

I think the only chance we have of taking america back is to work our asses off to make sure the right Dems are elected so we can take back the congress, and I truly believe that most of america is with us in that goal.

After that is successful, there are several fights we must take on.

1. We must make sure that our congress changes the rules of electing people to political office so that WE finance their campaigns and NO ONE ELSE can give them money. We MUST remove the corporations and wealthy individuals from the election equation.

2. Return the budget process to some form of sanity. In my view, this depends on removing the influence of the military-industrial-government complex. The concept of spending more on offense-notice I don't say 'defense'- than the rest of the world combined is beyond insanity. It's simply greed.

3. The nation is begging for some sort of universal health system. It's a 'slam-dunk' political campaign issue. The particular type of universal health care we choose can be debated. I lean toward the single payer system, but am open to suggestions.

4. Return the 'fairness doctrine'. This will bring equality back to the media and allow our views to be heard as well as the wingnuts.

5. Start building a base of leftist think tanks and media centers so that the right is not the only voice heard. They took three decades to do it. We can do it in three years if we put our minds to it.

Notice that points 1 thru 5 have as their prerequisites taking back the congress, which of course will be necessary and possibly even sufficient for impeachment.

So, if you really are fed up, get out there and make sure we get a dem congress.

It's up to you.
'
And me.

And everyone else here.

And every real American.

29. we're doing it in minneapolis
We had a highschool/college walkout last semester that had over 2,000 people at it. Which may not sound like much, but the anti-war rally just 6 months before that only had 150 people at it, and the one 2 months before that only had 50 at it. This semester it's going to be even bigger, and I think it will definitely have more "radical" overtones. There are young people, especially in highschool, that are doing a lot of good work.
