FReepers asked to skew great poll in Traverse City, MI. Don't let 'em
Edited on Thu Feb-16-06 07:14 PM by faygokid
Traverse City Record-Eagle. FReepers were asked to vote, so even though the good guys are winning, let's show 'em something. If the FReepers want to impose their will on one of the most beautiful places in America, let's crush them. Here's today's lead editorial, a beautiful thing:

Wheels are coming off Bush/Cheney machine

Plus, the poll question we have all waited to vote on:

Have you had enough of the Bush/Cheney administration?

Near 65% against Bushco when this fellow Michigander completed the poll. TC is a wonderful place!

43. Fess up. Where are you? I am moving out of state, but I love Michigan.
Long story, that, for another day. It's a mystical attachment for those of us who love the Great Lakes State. I will leave again soon, and that's another story, but this will always be Home. One whiff of the air, standing at Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes overlooking Lake Michigan. No fresher air. No prettier sight. Coming up I-75 and the Mackinac Bridge suddenly comes into view. Breathtaking. Chicken dinners and Bronner's in Frankenmuth, with family members no longer here. But Christmas is. A hot dog and a beer at Tiger Stadium with your buddies, watching Darrell Evans knock one out; an evening sailboat ride off Jefferson on the lake in Grosse Pointe; too much Retsina and laughter till it hurts in Greektown with dear friends; stopping for a pastie and then on to the Keeweenau peninsula - and on, and on, like interminably - and standing on a bluff overlooking Lake of the Clouds. Greenfield Village, Pistons at the Palace, Call of the Wild, Detroit Institute of Arts, fishing with your uncle on Houghton Lake, kissing your sweetheart in a late summer wheat field in the Thumb, ending that meeting at Garland with coworkers and volunteers over good fellowship, a glass of wine and stepping outside to look at the stars. Standing at dusk on the porch of the Grand Hotel looking right to the Bridge's first lights and left to the fading light over an historic lighthouse, then a five course meal, a good glass of wine, and great conversation. Gentlemen ties; ladies skirts. The Montreaux Jazz Festival, the Gateway of the North (Clare) and the aspens and pine after that; October sitting in Spartan or Michigan Stadium with brats and a beer or two in your stomach after tailgating. The International Bridge, gorgeous in Sault Ste. Marie, and the Blue Water Bridge, where Thomas Edison grew up and the entrance to the Lakes. Windsor dinners; when younger the Ballet. Huron, Michigan, St. Clair, Erie and mighty Superior. Unique not in the nation. The legend lives on, from the Chippewa on down. The Lakes are like nothing else, anywhere. The Streets of Detroit at the Detroit Historical Museum. Saugatuck as a gay icon community, beautiful with shopping and good spirits and great friends (surprise). Flint's history, the fight with the sit down strike and the incredible warmth of the re-enactors at Crossroads Village. The dome of the Capitol, fully restored. Music in Hamtramck at some great night spots, Christmas at the Capitol. Incredible Fayette Historical Park, the Michigan Historical Museum, Seney National Wildlife Refuge. A campfire before bed after a swim in Huron National Park, and a visit to the Lumberjack Memorial. It's quiet, and smells like cedar. The many wineries throughout the state, particularly in the Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas, more beautiful than Napa, and with wines as good. Fresh planked whitefish from Leland caught that day and finding sweet corn from a local farmer on an outof theway road with some of your dearest friends, on their porch in early August when summer is in full bloom, but the days grow predictably short. Then visiting the cider mill, feeling that first chill, eating that first donut, and remembering when Mom took you there, and somehow she always cooked best in the fall. The colors are what Vermont must be like, but because you're from Michigan, you know ours are even better. Without being smug. Because Michiganders aren't smug. See Super Bowl 2006. We're pretty cool, and a Blue state. Aretha Franklin, Al Kaline, Soupy Sales, Bob Seger, Lone Ranger, Barry Sanders, Carl Levin. The music of Motown, and the beauty of a walk in the woods with a dog whose impatience for that walk and unconditional love for just you will remain with you until your dying day. Telling your daughter to get out of the lake as it gets dark - really dark - but she doesn't want to do it, just like you didn't want to do it when you were 8, and you put your foot down and she comes out and you are as determined to wrap your towel around her and keep her warm as you have ever been to do anything ever. You swing her into your arms and say, Let's Go and she laughs and you take her back to the cottage. Mom gets her changed into her nightgown, and her hair is still wet, but you gather her on your lap and read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." She quit sucking her thumb years ago, but she reaches for it now. Three hours in the water is tiring for anyone. Pretty quickly she is a sack of potatoes, and you put her to bed (she is out)and somehow you wish she was still four, not eight, and you know it goes too fast, but there is little you can do about it (and now she is 30). A walk with the dog, a little bad TV, a half hour of struggling to keep your eyes open to read a good book, lights out, and you hope for a day just like that tomorrow. Maybe a barbecue this time, and knocking a softball around, because you're still in your 30s. That's Michigan. Guess it's OK. I want a Coney Island. Michigan style.

69. And you are leaving?
I think you could land a terrific job with the Michigan Tourist Bureau. :)

I am in the red part - conservative West Michigan, where the power is out tonight. There are many of we liberals dotting the area too, though. You wrote a wonderful sketch of Michigan. :toast: And you are leaving why?

Now if we could get Jennifer Granholm to have her country of birth annex us and get us away from Bushco, perhaps we can save the mitten state!

23. Laugh Out Loud. No LOL, really laughing out loud.
Couldn't agree more, but it wasn't a bad question at all, especially for a GOP area. But, they are good people, if traditional Republicans. They essentially are not Bushites. Visit the area sometime. I have traveled the world in my 55 years, and I love no place better.

I am glad and proud to be on your side. Amarillo; interesting. Have you been to Michigan? The fresh water and air there is like no where else. Are you a Texas native? Unlike some here, I think many Texans are cool. I have been in Texas. Many times. In fact, they may be the ones who say, enough, and crush this assault on America. That would be interesting, wouldn't it? It will take a Red State to destroy this evil corruption of America. Texas isn't likely, but maybe there are more like you there. With all due respect, I bow. And say thanks.

66. 67 % yes....I've been to Traverse City....
...I was just visiting and I'm sure other DUers know this area of Michigan better.

However, my impressions were that there is a lot of money in this small city. There seemed to be a lot of upper middle class folks...lots of vacation homes and McMansions on the lakes. The city was like a resort.

If Traverse City (his base) is turning against BushCo, maybe there is hope for the rest of the country.

67. You have it exactly right. And a great conclusion to this post.
If Traverse City has had it, maybe there is hope. Agreed.

77. It's too late to vote now-Traverse City is a very cool place
It's an excellent vacation spot, it's where I go (my grandpa lives there, so I get to stay at his bayfront home for free, or for the cost of cooking him some good meals).

My grandpa writes crank conservative complaint letters all the time to the Record-Eagle. I find them whenever I google his name.
