Second House GOP Retirement This Week
Second House GOP Retirement This Week
According to the Rocky Mountain News, via a "breaking news" email alert, Rep. Joel Hefley (R-CO 05) has decided to retire. It's not a big surprise as rumors of his pending retirement have been circulating for months. This is a very Republican district and boasts one of the country's leading conservatives as a voter: Focus on the Family's James Dobson. Hefley is the second House Republican to announce his retirement this week, joining Rep. Bill Jenkins (R-TN 01).

1. Good news for us. Do we have a candidate for that district yet?

3. That'll be a tough district for Dems to win
The district includes Colorado Springs, which is (at least when I was at Ft. Carson) a very conservative area. It has not only Focus on the Family, but several other fundie christian organizations that are very active in the city. As I recall, the district includes Kiowa County which is also very conservative.
The other thing to overcome is the local paper (actually local 'Hack-rag') is the Gazette-Telegraph. The gazette-telegraph hates liberals, Dems, gays, etc
If a Dem wins in that area, it's probably going to be someone of the Ben Nelson variety.

4. I'll take a Ben Nelson Democrat in a Republican District. As long
as they vote for Nancy Pelosi for Majority Leader, I'd be happy.
