13. oh my ... now i am in more giggles. from mass. wow
hey, have you spent a summer there. i am from dry areas, az, calif, reno..... but we drove thru tulsa one summer. i could hardly breath with the humidity.

that is a culture shock. we too have as many churches and they are building more. hey.. all these places are big enough once the schools are banrupt and fund dried up and voucher implemented, dominion (big in your area) will be using these churches for their private christian run schools.

there are good things about this area of the country too. i cant get my people to move. lot cheaper for the houses.

5. It'll take you one winter to get used to it and for
your S. CA blood to thicken up. I moved from L. A. to Kansas for a couple of years. Froze my A off the first winter, but the next winter I was more acclimatized. When I moved back to L. A. I was going to the beach and swimming when the thermometer was 60 degrees. I didn't feel it.

9. Welcome from Kearney, NE
You picked a cold day to move in. It's actually been pretty nice lately. Like 40's 50's and 60's even.

14. Welcome to NE...I'm up here in the Northeast corner, Norfolk to be
ezact. We just got 2" of snow last night, and it was pretty damn cold w/a 30 mph N wind...:scared:

Lincoln has some pretty good places and isn't anything like the rest of the state...:)

We hsare Jeff Fortenberry (R) 1st District and he is a real asshole.Got a rubberstamp and just goes w/the R's in the House. He didn't win by much last e,ection, and this time, he has $28,000 he got from Abrahmoff , ( a first term Rep gets more in one shot than most of the others got..:eyes: )

One thing I've noticed about NE, even though the people are basically RW nuts, they are pretty decnt people on the whole. I was impressed w/how friendly they are and most of them care about the environment, (farm country you know).

Welcome to DU and feel free to PM me at any time...:)

16. Serious condolences from a former resident.:
I lived in Lincoln for 6 years (1994-2000) and when I left I swore the state motto should be "ignorant and proud of it". I also swore I would never set foot in the state again because our neighbors filed a lawsuit against us to prevent my husband from building a home office for which the city had given us a permit. We went to court and lost (the neighbors' attorney was drinking buddies with the judge). Frontier justice is alive and well in Lincoln.

Bob Kerrey (former Senator and Governor of NE)used to be part owner of the Prairie Life Center on 70th St; an excellent health club(for pumping frigid blood)

Lincoln probably has more Dems than anywhere else in the state (which now has some 170,000 more registered Republicans than Dems). Get registered, go to a precinct meeting, find out when Jefferson Jackson dinner will be (probably May?) and go.

There is also a fairly active peace organization (or used to be). Call up the Lancaster County Dems and ask about it and other groups. If you're pro-choice, the local Planned Parenthood will seriously be able to use your help since about 45% of the town is very right-wing Catholic (one of two dioceses in the country that didn't allow altar girls when we were there) There were major protests from an Omaha group in front of Westminster Presbyterian Church when I was there because the MD who did abortions was a deacon at that church and the Operation Rescue folks didn't approve. It was quite a sight on Sunday mornings.

So...good luck. And if you don't have a good reason for being in Lincoln, don't stay!

22. PS--I went to La Jolla High and then UCLA
and lived in Southern CA from 1965-1988 so I empathize with your transition to the frigid weather with that wind blowing off the prairie ALL the time.

18. Welcome to Lincoln

Hey Cult,
Welcome to Lincoln, yes there are a lot of conservatives in general. However, I find the people very friendly. Not born, but raised here. Lot of conservatives, but Lincoln has a share of more enlightened thought.

Anyone been to the Blue Orchid yet?

Peace
