"V for Vendetta" -- f*cking fantastic!
Just back from a screening of "V for Vendetta" -- I'm still reeling in astonishment
that this movie is coming out in America, right now, and is being released by a
major corporation.

Everything is in here: MIHOP, bio-warfare, the suspension of
rights, "rendition," a stab at O'Reilly/Rushbo lying propaganda, fake television
"news" (greeted with "bollocks!" by the viewers), American imperialism (it's the
spillover of an endless American war that affects the Britain of 2020), the secret
camps (built by Halliburton?), the queer-bashing as propaganda tool, the use of fear
to control a populace, etc.

And, of course, a revolutionary hero at the center.

The film also reveals the necessity of "low" culture in a free (or, at least,
once-free) society: a comic book story (written in the 80's) suggesting that a
"stable Western democracy" could be taken over by election-rigging, torture-loving
rightwingers would be "too outlandish" for proper NY Times-approved lit novels...
(well, some years later Roth circled around some related themes, I guess...), at
least nowadays when our illusions about ourselves are more desperate.

In any case, see it before the next staged terror "event" and martial law requires
all prints to be seized!

54. Errrr, no. THIS is the anti-Red Dawn:
http://imdb.com/title/tt0493264

Because, in order to be an accurate equivalent, it has to be lame too. I very much doubt V for Vendetta is lame.

12. All screen adaptions of Alan Moore have sucked so far.
Why cant they do like the Japanese do and create anime versions? When you do live action you have to change the story of manga to accomdidate the egos of Hollywood stars. I am not expecting great things from Portman, as bad as she was in some of her prevoious flicks, and her role is central in V.

movies just one film too soon! (Though, given his history, you can see why!)

17. Only because they changed the stories so much.
LXG cold have been KILLER- the cast & sets were okay-

-it was the story that turned it into the worst movie of the year!

I actaully think "From Hell" is watchable- I've read tons on Jack the Ripper- the murder scene sets were accurate. I love the look of the movie too. The Huges Bros. even used a lot of original panels for story boards...

Or will we have to drive for miles to find a showing? If it doesn't open wide the impact will be muted.

36. I think it will open all over based on the article I read
in Entertainment Weekly. It seemed like everyone interviewed about the film made a point of saying (and I'm totally paraphrasing here) "Well, some people will see it as critical of our current political climate but others will not. Most will see it as a thriller along the lines of the Matrix." It seemed like they were really downplaying it's pointed statements to appeal to a mass audience. That suggests to me they plan to put it in theaters everywhere.

The sad thing is that many droolers could probably see a movie like that and NOT see the statement it's making. They won't connect the dots unless Faux News connects them.

and i would really like to see it, but unfortunately they don't show any good movies in the theaters here because honestly, very few people down here will go see a movie like V for Vendetta.(i'm in the south, and we had to travel 2 hours just to get to a theater that was showing F-9/11) So i'll probably have to do what i'm doing with "Good Night and Good Luck," just wait till it comes out on DVD.

30. How many theaters will turn down a movie made by "the Matrix guys"?
My guess is none & none. Plus, Comic book movies are HOT and have a built-in, sure-to-come audience.

I suppose it could depend what other popcorn/special effects block-busters come out at the same time- but I'll bet this one will do fine.

31. well, good for Natalie Portman ...
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20060216.V16/TPStory/?query=

"This is supposed to be Saturday-night entertainment, a popcorn film," said McTeigue, for whom the film is a directorial debut, "but one that provokes a lively discussion."

Setting her sights a little higher, Portman added that to act in or watch a movie is to practise empathy for other people.

"Attending a movie is a world-bettering act," she said to the room of cinephiles and critics. She was swift to put in a plug for FINCA International, a micro-financing organization she supports that provides loans to women in the developing world.
