Another story about the 2000 election.
One of my patients today was an older gentleman, a Democrat from one of the rural counties in Tennessee. The entire time I was in his room he had continual visitors, all of whom were Methodist Democrats. Warmed my heart to see so many older liberal folks from a rural county and they even had to hug me while they were there. All that to say this patient (who has been elected to some state government positions in the past) said that he was living in Lee County, Florida during the 2000 vote and when he went to vote they looked at his voting registration card and his wife's and told them that Democrats had to vote at this one booth. He considered it odd but did it anyway but says he feels very sure that that machine did not get its votes counted. He continued the story to the person who was with me while I took a call so I missed the details of the story but he said he was very angry about it and feels like he was robbed of his vote and wants to make sure it doesn't happen again. Did anyone else hear stories about Lee County?

1. This reminds me of the "voting assistants"
in the South after the Civil War.

"If you're black and can't read, come over here, and I'll help you vote."

2. How would anyone know you were a Democrat?
Why would you tell the poll workers who you were going to vote for?

3. Voter registration--or they could ask.

4. The NAACP and PFAW took testimony from thwarted voters...
...who described a myriad of "procedural oddities."

Here's a link to their summary report.

This was 4 days after the (s)election.
