Pretty comprehensive article re Whittington in Austin American-Statesman
Edited on Thu Feb-16-06 11:34 PM by Zen Democrat
This doesn't mention anything about Harry's wife (is it true that she's James Baker's sister?). But all in all this story makes Harry sound like a good guy, or as good a guy as the Republicans can produce in Texas.

A libertarian reformer who fights against government power? How do you reconcile that with supporting John Tower and George Bush?

But it sounds like his work with the prison board was positive. He lobbied Rick Perry to sign the bill prohibiting execution of the mentally retarded - but Goodhair vetoed it.

1. Molly Ivins said about the same thing...
In her column this week she had a lot of good things to say about him.

3. Well, no, she didn't say a lot of good things about him...
... I think she only mentioned the prison issue as perhaps the only example of his "liberal" tendencies, and qualified it with a statement that Harry Whittington was about as liberal as Texas Republicans get, and that bar is about "matchbook high."

I think what she was aiming at was that Whittington is the injured party here, not Cheney, and that when the defenders of Cheney start laying blame on the injured party, it's dirty pool.
