Schaefer remarks raise eyebrows
Comment to aide spurs shock, anger, laughter

ANNAPOLIS // Comptroller William Donald Schaefer was unapologetic Wednesday after making suggestive comments to a young female aide to the governor during a meeting of the state Board of Public Works.

Responding to Schaefer's request for tea, the woman, an executive assistant in Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.'s front office, set down a thermal mug in front of the comptroller. Schaefer, 84, watched her walk away, then beckoned for her to return. When she obliged, he told her, "Walk again," staring after her as she left a ceremonial conference room at the State House.

Schaefer defended the comment in a profanity-laced rant at reporters after the meeting.

"That's so goddamn dumb, I can't believe it," Schaefer said when asked about the appropriateness of his remark. "She's a pretty little girl."

Look, DU is (realistically) about 25 thousand potential activists. Are we so scared that we aren't comfortable with casting the same lens on ourselves that we cast on Republicans?

He's one of "us". Somebody our party has been supporting. Do we want this shit to stop?

If it's not O.K. for Congressmen (regardless of political affiliation) to ask an employee to "walk away" for sexual gratification, shouldn't we say something to our "leadership"? Shouldn't we demand that this sort of issue be addressed?


We've been bitching about the "good ol' boys club" that the Republicans have.....shouldn't we be addressing the same issues in our own party?

Of course, I was a 21-yr-old lane waitress and the guy was a drunken redneck bowler. You kind of expect it in that setting...in the State House as a governor's executive assistant, not so much.
