The new Bush 50 state approval numbers are out (40% nationally)
Baby Bush is down in a few states and up a little in a few more, but overall unchanged at 40%.

Some noteworthy points:

*Bush stands at 49% in Texas.

*His best state is Utah (58%); his worst is Rhode Island (25%).

*I'm persistently amazed that Hawaii is regularly one of the best blue states for Bush (38% this month).

*Ohio is Bush's worst red state (37%)

*Maybe we're a little hard on the Deep South. Of the 7 states where Bush has a 50% or higher approval rating, only Alabama (53%) is in the Deep South. The other 6 are in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain states.

to realize that they can't trust Bush and that not everything printed in their paper or broadcast on Fox News is true. And "registered Republican" does not equate with "Bush supporter no matter what."

As sick as it sounds.. it's true. I've met many "religious" people, from when we lived in a very right wing town, who moved to either Utah or Idaho, to get away from people of other colors and religions. They were wacked out to the point of refusing to let their children play with or buy dolls of any other color. When things get kooky religiously in this country, those types try to migrate toward a safe place in their crazy little minds.

they're not too bright to begin with. Anyone who would believe the nonsensical musings of Joseph Smith (visted by the "angel", Maroni :eyes: ) and actually build a religion around it hasn't got too much to work with upstairs to begin with. Mormons have to be the most gullible people on the planet.

like all the other people caught up in CT's rather sweeping general indictment of the intellect of Mormons.

Last November, when Reid brought the senate to its knees, it was Reid is brilliant; Reid is a hero; Reid for President, etc.

66. Just like my "sweeping general indictment"........
your "sweeping general observation", that every Democrat got weak in the knees over Reid last November is probably wrong. He was doing his job and I'm still not all that enamored with his "leadership". Harry's certainly not using his full brain capacity if he believes all of that LDS horse-hockey. I've heard of temporary suspension of disbelief before, but permanent suspension of disbelief? That's exactly what's necessary to believe the Mormon dogma. Christianity itself is a stretch, but Joe Smith took it to a whole new level. A level that requires shutting down the independent thought mechanism completely. I know it's a fault of mine and perhaps I should work on it, but I have little patience with people who are into such self-delusion.

My point is simply that DU GD and GD Politics were plastered with hurrahs for Reid, who was/is a Mormon.

I wanted to illustrate that when you were slinging around your generality you were swinging it onto him, a prominent Democrat who seems by general standards to be pretty intelligent.

31. I have to agree that the Mormon "myth" is pretty wild.
People can believe whatever they want, but you've got to really want to believe that hooey to swallow it whole the way they do.

I wonder what it is like to be the kind of person who has to be told what to think or believe, and then thinks or believes whatever they are told. It sounds comfortable, at least. No thinking, no uncertainty.

Why do they all live in Utah? Is there something special about the air or water there?

Check out Palmyra, New York ... not far from Rochester ... site of the Hill Cumorah Pageant. The pageant has been performed in upstate New York since 1937. Hill Cumorah is one of the Church's most significant landmarks. Latter-day Saints believe it was here, in 1827, that the Church’s founder, Joseph Smith Jr., received from an angel a record of ancient American peoples who knew of and believed in Jesus Christ. The record, written on gold plates, was translated into what is known as the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

Thanks for pointing that out about the south. Southerners are definitely largely Bush-skeptic. The problem is the hallelujah/militia movement populations in other parts of the country. My mom's home state of Arkansas hates Bush as much as Nevada does, and that is a substantial amount.

Gods bless my own California, though - only three states hate him more than we do. If it wasn't for Orange County, I feel sure we'd be at the head of the pack. :)

i don't know the exact pop numbers in a mathematical calc of this, but one can confidently say that a significant, if not majority, chunk of conservative votes of california come from orange county. everywhere else that's "red" (state of mind) is generally sparsely populated. i'm thinking either some county in san diego, or maybe riverside, might be the other closest contesting county for orange county's "red" (state of mind) voting bloc.

size of land area =! # of votes (thank god)

if orange county flipped for any particular vote, it doesn't mean it isn't still staunchly conservative. :D

There's a lot of poverty in the Deep South, which makes these folks more dependent on social services than in other areas. As time goes by it is becoming more obvious that the Bush cartel is determined to continue their campaign to gut these programs, and it's going over like a fart in church.

These older women are less likely to get (the real) news from the 'net and far more likely to believe anything their ministers say, and you better believe a lot of sermons were directed to telling folks to vote their "faith" (anti abortion, anti gay rights, etc). 67. Maybe we got no demographics, but comparing notes like this is helpful
I don't know if it's universally understood, but my home state of WV is distinctly a southern state. Karl Rove can spend a gazillion dollars on slick ad campaigns to convince us that everything the evil cartel does is good, but the blue hairs fall for this thing only up to a point:

I just got my food stamps cut off = BAD

I got a Social Security cost of living increase, but my Medicare premium increase took it all = BAD

My grandson had to move in with me because HUD stopped subsidizing his rent = BAD

My best friend who goes to our church told me they just cut off assistance for her autistic son = BAD

My daughter worked at a General Motors plant for 15 years. Now she's working at Wal-Mart = BAD

I'm tellin' ya, we're looking at a big victory in Congress this year if sothern states have anything to say about it. Write it on the wall, and let's compare notes in December.

Although even the half-backs were attracted to Edwards, which is a good sign. I agree that this year is critical. My prayer (in GA we MUST pray to get rid of repugs lol) is that they will vote their pocketbooks and sweep, sweep, sweep.

The key I think, as illustrated by our conversation, is for us to identify the "natural" dems who were hoodwinked by * and work on getting them back (or into) the party. Blue hairs would check themselves out of ICU on election day if necessary...they ARE going to vote. Our job is to get them to vote against repugs.

I enjoyed our chat. Sorry to be slow responding but I had the world's greatest grands today and they hog the 'puter.

100. Drug Plan's Start May Imperil G.O.P.'s Grip on Older Voters
Edited on Sat Feb-18-06 07:31 PM by Lasher
Well lookee hyar, brer cat:

WASHINGTON, Feb. 18 — Older voters, a critical component of Republican Congressional victories for more than a decade, could end up being a major vulnerability for the party in this year's midterm elections, according to strategists in both parties. Paradoxically, one reason is the new Medicare drug benefit, which was intended to cement their loyalty.

During next week's Congressional recess, Democrats are set to begin a major new campaign to highlight what Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the Democratic leader, describes as "this disastrous Republican Medicare prescription drug plan." Democratic incumbents and challengers plan nearly 100 public forums around the country, armed with briefing books and talking points on a law that, party leaders assert, "was written by and for big drug companies and H.M.O.'s, not American families."

<snip>

For years, Democrats counted on the over-60 vote to regularly return their party to power on Capitol Hill — the party of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Social Security and Medicare, as Democrats were quick to remind retirees. But that changed in the 1990's, when that vote began tilting toward the Republicans.

One reason for the change was demographics — the passing of the New Deal generation and its replacement with retirees whose political loyalties were formed in a more Republican era. But it also reflected Republican success in muting or neutralizing the longtime Democratic advantage as the more trustworthy party on Social Security and Medicare. The passage of the Medicare prescription drug law in 2003 was intended to be the crowning accomplishment of that strategy.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/19/politics/19older.html?ex=1140930000&en=f9105c223ac22c92&ei=5043&partner=EXCITE

Pretty much like you and I have just been saying. But if Democrats are smart, the Medicare prescription drug 'benefit' will be part of the discussion but not the main topic. They need to keep it simple: "Is Medicare coverage better today than it was 5 years ago? How about Medicaid? If you think they are, you should vote for our republican opponents. They hate Social Security, and have been doing their best to gut the program. Give us control of the House and Senate, and we promise to protect Social Security against their attacks. The Medicare prescription drug 'benefit' was designed benefit drug companies and insurance carriers more than it was to help seniors. If you don't agree with that, youy should vote for republicans, who are sure to deliver more of the same. If you do agree, restore control of Congress to the Democratic party, and we will put your interests first every time!"

to determine if those churches deserve their non-profit status. If they're using religion to garnish votes for the Republicans, they crossed the line.

http://www.counterpunch.org/chuckman08252005.html
"Hitler, despite huge expenditures and desperately hard campaigns, never received more than just over a third of votes. He was appointed Chancellor, after a long series of backroom manipulations, by the Republic's ancient and exhausted President von Hindenburg."

Nice to see documentation that the South isn't some unassailable monolith of Bush support.

Seems they are smarter than people want to admit. My home state of Tennessee has never reached a 50% approval rate in 2005. The majority have disapproved of brush for well over a year. Too bad the vote counts in 2004 didn't reflect this.

48. Are there any such figures for 2004 available?
The closest I could find at that site were from Sept. 2005 and they showed the following:

Every state with a Bush approval rating of less than 40% went to Kerry (except for Ohio and Florida)

Every state with a Bush disapproval rating of greater than 60% went to Kerry (except for Ohio)

Every state with a net approval of less than -20% went to Kerry (except for Ohio)

59. I'm doing my part
The problem is that everyone around here loves(d) Chafee's father. The whole name recognition thing kills me. We wouldn't be stuck with the spoiled brat asshole as prez if it weren't for his name (and money.)

The hereditary Senate and presidency is one of my biggest political pet peeves. But I guess people are comfortable with what they know.

Our few repuubs can tell themselves that they aren't like *those* republicans and point to chafee. It's not looking all that great for the dems, but I'm doing my part and not giving up hope. I just hope our few resident freepers get out the vote in the repub primary.

Anyway, the one we need to get rid of is the damned govenor. He bought his office, said he wasn't going to serve more than one term, then oops-- he changed his mind. Quel Surprise. Sigh. I can't stand that fascist bastard. He's as bad as spoiled little frat boy prez, but with less power.

26. God! What the fuck is wrong with Wyoming?
Wyoming, IMHO, is the most beautiful state that lies in the interior US. Something weird about the color of the roads, the sky against the meadows, the far-off rock formations, and the mountains. If there was one state that I wish we could steal from the right (not taking population into account) it would be Wyoming. Since like 6 people live there, it wouldn't be a difficult red state to take over. I say we do it.
