Sophie Scholl - The Final Days, movie about White Rose Society

The German movie about Sophie Scholl and the White Rose opens today in theaters in the U.S.

The movie accurately portrays the last 6 days before 3 German students, Sophie, her brother Hans and Christoph Probst were beheaded for treason for resisting Fascism. It uses dialog from archived interrogation transcripts.

The film has been nominated for an Academy award as best foreign language film of 2005 (it is subtitled in English) and won 3 Lolas, the German equivalent of the Oscar.

I will see it when comes near here - it is only showing in NY in 4 theaters - so check right away where the closest theater and playing dates are in your state. This is a film that must be seen widely. DVD will not be available until the end of 2006. Take all your friends and better yet, take a Repub.

1. There is a simple memorial in Munich

I didn't expect it but I started crying uncontrollably as I read it. I don't know why. Perhaps it was because these kids knew just how hopeless their cause was, just how inevitable it was that they would be caught and executed, and just how what they did was the only possible ethical choice they could make in their brief lives.

2. I have been waiting for this movie. I keep checking on it

to see when and where it is playing. I may have to take a trip into NYC from CT just to see it. It always seems like the best movies, or the movies I am always most anxious to see are the ones that never get wide distribution.
