The question is; Even though nowadays we are being inundated with a tidal wave of information; are we informed. I would contend that we are not informed. Issues are complex and require more than the cursory attention that is be offered in most of today’s press. There is such a rush to be there on the next event that in-depth reporting is lost.
This is not going unnoticed by the politicians. Much of what would be opposed by the general public is hidden within legislation that is becoming, by design, more complex. If the public is only presented the surface of any legislation without a drilling down to the true meaning, they, the public, will be mislead.
If this is the problem; then the question is how do we fix the problem.

But most importantly, win the 06 COngressional and Senate Majorities and pass legislation to 1), turn back the deregulation of the media industry and 2) restore the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE!

3. And another problem is... |
|
how much can we mentally handle?
Andrew Weil in one of his books suggests a "news fast" as a way to reduce stress. Of course, for news junkies (like me) this would be cold turkey and awful. But it is a problem, I think. We are fragmented in so many ways with so many events, disasters, stories, anecdotes, opinions... it makes our heads very noisy and desensitizes us. And then there is what I call the "world guilt quotient." It is hard not to feel personally responsible for everything. But probably not a good thing to do.
I am my brother's keeper...but am I also his keeper if he lives on the other side of the world? I haven't solved that yet.
I think I skewed quite a bit from your original post, which was basically whom to trust. I trust no one. I read it all. I don't trust everything even on DU. I read it all and watch it all and make my decisions. EVERYBODY has an agenda. There is no purity in news reporting. The only way we can really know is to be there ourselves.
