Are New York Republicans different than other Republicans? |
|
It's a weird question, but I need to know the answer -- I made a major faux pas with a new supervisor -- she assured me she was a New York Republican, which was different from other Republicans -- I need to know if I am in deep doo doo already.......
(I think I am... dear lord)

I was just being a bit sarcastic. I work with a few of those kinds of people. All they care about in the end is their money and their power and making sure no one else can either of the two. they are very scary.

3. Yes, Repugs vary from Blue to Red states |
|
More typically I have heard of the "Rockefeller Repub" which means fiscal conservative, socially liberal. And that may be what your boss means.
But also a Blue state Repub is not nearly as conservative as a Red state Repug, in general. Just as many red state Dems are more conservative than Blue state Dems.

Because they are in a sophisticated state, NY Repugs have to claim they are "better" than your run of the mill Repug. But, when push comes to shove, on every issue, they back the exact same things all Repugs back.
They are no different at all, except in their own minds. But, you did make a mistake discussing politics at work with a supervisor!

Lived in New York Republican land a long time. Had my very Republican uncle tell me "That just because we didn't find weapons of mass destruction doesn't mean they weren't there" The are just as ill informed and just as racist as southern Republican.

6. Theoretically, there are liberal republicans |
|
What passes for "liberal" these days is not being a complete fascist when it comes to reproductive rights. I.e., Pataki, Ghouliani et al claim to be pro-choice.
That's the theory. Push comes to shove, though, these liberal republicans support fascist pigs.

Of course, sane republicans have no representation in the current GOP, so anyone who's still supporting the GOP is either not paying attention or they're a neocon/fascist. Or an oil executive.

Nelson Rockefeller was governor of the state for a very long time -- maybe over 12 years. He was a liberal Republican; that sounds odd to many but not to New Yorkers. New York has had Republican governors since but none of them was a Neo- con or member of the Christian Taliban. The City has had Republican mayors in the last twenty years like Gulianani but none of them was a Neo con or a talibanist.

The demographics, especially NYC require more moderate stances. There are people in New York state and City who are wingnuts just as there are everywhere else. I would bet that the "average" NYC Republican party member is more moderate than the "average" South Carolina party member. But the politicians can look at voter numbers and know who has and doesn't have a chance to win election in a city with 9 - 1 Democrat to GOP registration.
Now if we would only be willing do the same in GOP strongholds.

14. they're not big on the "christian" aspect of banana republicanism |
|
they're far more obsessed with tax cuts. they like the tough leader type (think giuliani), but live and work in a very culturally diverse area, and so tend not to be overly exclusionary with regard to races, religions, etc.
but it doesn't count for much, because they'll vote for the "christian" proclaimer banana republican nutjob either way. until new york republicans vote for the democrat in droves, the way reagan democrats voted in the '80s, then they're all just plan republicans to me.

15. They have gay friends, but they will still pocket your money |
|
They are socially liberal but just as crooked as the rest of them. Bloomberg is given the benefit of the doubt too often. He is a HUGE Bush contributor, gives money to Repub candidates all over the place, handed the city over to the GOP lock stock and barrel for the convention and turned Manhattan into a police state, and just loves to hand over big parcels of land to his cronies, such as the Jets stadium fiasco and the redevelopment of Brooklyn. He's a crook, they're all crooks, but they wear their liberal hats on social issues. After Giuliani announced on tv that he was getting a divorce, before he told his wife, he then moved into the apartment of a gay couple and stayed there for months.

in Las Vegas assures me she's a "liberal republican," an oxymoron if there ever was one. As best as I can figure she makes a boatload selling slot machines to casinos and wants to keep as much of it as possible, but definitely has nothing in common with the fundie types on social issues.

22. Probably-in MI, Oakland CO repubs are different than W. MI repubs |
|
Oakland County republicans are rich, Detroit suburbanites, many of whom are pro-choice and socially liberal, although, like in any community, there are plenty who are social conservatives
W. Michigan republicans are very conservative, socially, and Livingston County republicans are probably closet KKK members.
Oakland County has it's share of moderate GOP members, like David Gorcyca (their prosecutor), or Michael Bouchard (their Sheriff who is running in the GOP primary to take on Debbie Stabenow for her Senate seat). Gerald Ford, a moderate, is from West Michigan and is much celebrated there, even though he was not really their kind of republican.

23. Ever hear of "Republicans for Kerry"? Plenty of them here in PA. |
|
Tragically, I actually met Catholic "Democrats" who bought the godly image of W and voted against Kerry.
On the flip side, I was a Republican for Kerry and met a hell of a lot of like-minded "Rockefeller Republicans" who detest the Iraq invasion, the social regression and the fiscal irresponsibility of the current administration...many, including myself, ended up either registering independent, libertarian or Democrat. I NEVER voted for W. EVER!

No idea what it is like in "The City" - but our State Senator was Tom Libous, and Sherwood Boehlert was the Congressman from the adjacent Congressional district - certainly more "Liberal" on social issues then some Red State Dems.
Hinchey (Dem) was our Congressman.
