If it is such a great miracle, as some posit here, then I guess God decided that he didn't want it to be too fabulous, so he let one of them die. Is that the reasoning?

Great or fortunate news does not equal divine intervention. Attributing the survival of the 12 miners to divine intervention is an INSULT to the ingenuity and willpower of the miners. By saying that they survived due to the whims of a deity, robs them of the admiration they deserve for their own actions.
