40 Million Just Hang Out Online Each Day

POSTED: 10:46 am EST February 17, 2006

About 40 million Internet users go online just for fun or to pass the time each day, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

Some 30 percent of Internet users go online on any given day for no particular reason, just for fun or to pass the time. That makes it one of the most populat online activities and indicates that the online environment is increasingly popular as a place for people to spend their free time, the group said.

Surfing for fun now stands only behind sending or receiving email (52 percent) and using a search engine (38 percent) as typical daily activities. It is in a virtual tie for third with getting news (31 percent).

In a survey in late November 2004, the group found about 25 million people went online on any given day just to browse for fun.

Before the internet it was the bars, but then they banned smoking in them so we just come here now. What next, internet-hand smoke bans :)

4. Actually, the net provided me an outlet where I could socialize
for the first time in my life because I'm one of those folks who are allergic to cigarette smoke. Trying to breathe around a smoker feels exactly like trying to breathe under water. I had completely given up on ever having any sort of a social life before the net came along because all social functions were held in a grey fog of stinking cigarette smoke.

So you smokers can just can the whining. It's just your turn now. Set fire to that thing outside, willya?

not having to breath their foul breath... I got cha. I don't smoke but have read that smokers tend to be more creative and talkative than non-smokers. Now, that might have changed recently since so many smokers had to give it up and start to lead "clean, healthy" lives.

My worst thing with smokers was on trains and subways when one through circumstances beyond their control got stuck in one of those cars and came out gasping for air.

I am a former smoker so I won't trash them...but I understand how you feel...

Now you can just commune with us former "addicts" of that kind in the comfort of clean air from the privacy of your laptop or home computer with out feeling you might pass out. :D
