Unembedded Photojournalists on the War in Iraq on CSPAN2 now |
|
Edited on Sat Feb-18-06 09:02 PM by Viva_La_Revolution
Go check out the website, there's some incredible stuff there. Some of it is pretty graphic, even CSPAN posted a warning before the show.
Unembedded: Four Independent Photojournalists on the War in Iraq Kael Alford, Thorne Anderson, Rita Leistner, Phillip Robertson
Three independent photojournalists who covered the war in Iraq show and discuss their work. The photographs, collected in the book "Unembedded," show the war from the point of view of those living in Iraq. During the presentation, panelists talk about why they decided to cover the war without embedding and describe what it was like to cover the seige of Najaf by U.S. forces in August of 2004. Salon.com Iraq War correspondent Phillip Robertson, who wrote the introduction to the book, joins in on the discussion. This event was hosted by Barnes & Noble Booksellers in New York City. Some of the photographs shown during this presentation are graphic in nature.

Many are dead from "accidents", and being present after an attack when helicopters came in after the fact and killed bystanders.
Many of them are Children.
I'll be around for a while, Viva.

with the old cover of Hitler - same setup. He said the artwork for the cover was done before the invasion even started. see the covers here - http://www.time.com/time/covers/1101030421/x/

8. Surely not, Bush was trying every peaceful means possible at the time. |
|
Time knew the score. Why wouldn't they? The order was in.

10. He also seemed to imply that the analogy was a false one |
|
as Hitler had been invading other nations, while Saddam was not.
Yep. Saddam was staying put. I wonder how differently things would have been if Time put the photo of Rumsfeld and Saddam shaking hands on the cover? And a story on Cheney illegally doing business with Iraq?
It might have somewhat undercut the claim that we were going in to free Iraq.

in that they show it from the other side, from the Iraqi POV. I think Rita Leistner's affected me the most. Thanks, VLR, for posting this link.

9. the picture of the local date farmer with his mother |
|
speaks volumes. And we were being told by our government that the insurgents were 'foreigners'. it was a lie.

The photo of one woman saying "It is safer here." The photos in the mental hospital bring home the seldom discussed reality that mental illness is also a result of war.
It destroys lives in many different ways.
returning troops are also suffering.

20. On suffering returning troops |
|
I've said for a long time pissed off Iraq vets are going to make the pissed off Vietnam vets look mildly upset by comparison. Just a prediction.

12. Discussing how medication is unable to get through. |
|
even from relief agencies.
Individuals who would be able to function in society are hospitalized because they can not get meds.
Why is it the US can't provide this? It would seem to be something far easier to accomplish than rebuilding water systems.
At the very least, to work with the agencies who provide relief.

19. I can't help thinking there has to be a way around even that. |
|
I recall that Tipper Gore was going to make mental health her focus as first lady. What power would she have to influence others in government to take care of what seems to be an easily accomplished goal?
I wonder if there aren't other senators or representatives who are willing to work to get relief for Iraq in this regard.
Individuals who can't keep from imagining horrible things in the best of times are going to disintegrate in the middle of a war. Those around them will also suffer immensely and the fears can actually exacerbate danger with the irrational behavior that overtakes them.

It replays tomorrow morning. I'm okay, but that tasty roast I pulled out of the oven a few minutes ago doesn't look so tasty anymore. :( On a lighter note - Al Gore's daughter Karenna and Tipper are up at 11pm http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x457590#457771

|
a country at war.
Paraphrased - "ALL THE SHEEPLE ARE SLEEPING!!! THERE'S A FREAKING WAR GOING ON! WAKE THE FUCK UP! LOOK AT WHAT THEY ARE DOING IN OUR NAME!!"
