Abramoff explained that he was ‘close to Newt (Gingrich, then speaker of the House of Representatives).’ The astonished lobbyists for Bhutto learned that Abramoff had travelled to Islamabad and had sold his services to the Pakistani military without the prime minister’s knowledge.”
