45. Nobody fabricated it per se
During these sort of things, hearsay often becomes the current information. Even we did it here by spreading it. We didn't have it confirmed any more than they did. It's a weird part of human nature.

There's plenty of blame to spread around and certainly the news organizations should have labeled these statements as being unconfirmed but I think we need to keep our anger where it belongs - with corporate cronyism.

I'm just aghast. Not only for the tragedies these families are enduring, but for the pitiful state of our media that would allow such an egregious error. I can't imagine how the families of these victims must be feeling. Just horrible :( .

But the fact that the media HAD to be there and intrude on the privacy of the families both in the initial rejoicing and current suffering.

BREAKING NEWS

Updated: 3:04 a.m. ET Jan. 4, 2006
TALLMANSVILLE, W.Va. - Family members report that 11 of the 12 coal miners who were initially thought to have survived an explosion in a coal mine have died. The sole survivor is hospitalized.

The families were told by company officials about the deaths more than three hours after Gov. Joe Manchin said he had been told 12 of the miners had survived. Tears of joy turned to tears of grief as families demanded answers about what caused the miscommunication.

"We feel like we've been lied to all alone," said one family member on CNN. ...

communication between the rescuers and the command center, and overhearing it wrong. Not a command center person, but somebody else - something about a cell phone conversation, I think. (At least that's how I understood it.)

38. Well, he seems to have said that there was some sort of miscommunication
that came from the rescuers to the command center. I really thought I had heard him say something earlier about and overheard cell phone conversation, so I don't know where that came from. We'll probably find out more tomorrow.

This is so sad. How devastating this must be for the families, to get their hopes up like that, but then hear that their family members had died after all.
