3. That's what they said earlier
They are saying that cell phone conversations were overheard, that they never said they were alive.

15. Malloy was nearly right early in his show...
... he predicted all dead. One, thankfully, survived, but the MAJOR fuck-up by SOMEONE -- and I'm beginning to think it's someone on the state payroll -- got too many people's hopes up.

24. At least MSNBC was the first major site to change the AP story...
... once the sad truth was learned.

BREAKING NEWS

Updated: 3:14 a.m. ET Jan. 4, 2006

"TALLMANSVILLE, W.Va. - Family members of miners trapped in a West Virginia mine say only one of the 13 miners survived.

International Coal Group Chief Executive Officer Ben Hatfield told the families that only one miner, Randal McCloy, had survived the explosion.

Hatfield told the families gathered at the Sago Baptist Church that "there had been a lack of communication, that what we were told was wrong and that only one survived," said John Groves, whose brother Jerry Groves was one of the trapped miners.

At that point, chaos broke out in the church and a fight started. ..."

10. Of course not
Nothing is their fault. Bastards. I noticed in the late night press conference last night, the first held by the company, they put the lawyer out first. It was the Sr. Counsel, then the VP. They are playing an ass covering game.

17. They're pissed, but they contributed to the hysteria
Anderson Cooper must feel like a damned fool, but he didn't bother to verify that 12 miners were found alive. He just took the word of a local, and then trumpeted later that CNN was first with the "breaking news" at 11:14 or something like that.

I'm as pissed at the media for amplifying an unconfirmed account as I am at the obvious miscommunication. I cannot imagine the heartbreak of the families.

31. I understand that, but CNN should have called it "unconfirmed."
Their "Breaking News" bar said Miners Found Alive. But it seems the CNN producers never confirmed that with the company, and should have expressed more caution. Their presence on the scene (and MSNBC's, I hear) helped whip up the hysteria and the hope. But nobody confirmed anything.

Sanjay Gupta was incredibly skeptical on the air, while Anderson Cooper appeared relieved, touched, and happy. It was strange to watch, and then really awful when it all turned out to be wrong.

I really feel that the media went overboard in their optimism this evening, and they should be apologetic for that, but they're not, so far.

Does anyone know if the company ever confirmed to the news media that the miners were found alive? Cooper keeps saying "the company waited three hours to talk," but were CNN's producers trying to reach them, or get to the bottom of things, during the time they insisted the miners were alive?

34. my theory
I think that the miners were found alive as reported but the company could not look good reporting that they died AFTER being found. I can't believe that trained rescue crews would report them alive if they weren't. I also want to know why they told the families to await the miners in the church if they already knew that they were dead. The co said they learned 20 minutes after the initial report. That doesn't make any sense. Then they tried to say that the miners died of carbon monoxide. The hospital reported that there was NO sign of carbon monoxide in the survivor, so that IS A LIE!

19. notice "corporate" can't even manage a tear.
He now says its an emotional time and he's not upset with the employee's families for being angry. Blank him and "corporate" and the W administration.

Now he's bragging about profit again and that profit is most important. Profit is all.

25. What did that local reporter ask?
The one who identified that he worked for a local paper (Huntington?) and asked the CEO what he had to say to the local communities...The CEO went on his spiel about the financial strength of the business, and the reporter followed up with something like "...communication skills?" The CEO didn't look too happy about it.

Anyone?

29. AC now saying that they were given word by a family member
Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 03:34 AM by Not_Giving_Up
That someone came from the mine and said that 12 were alive. (No one told them any different, even though the company knew within 20 minutes that it was wrong.) Anderson is now pointing out that the company did not correct the story. Company claimed that since they didn't know who was alive or dead, they wanted to have all the info before telling the families anything. Governor to give a statement soon.
