HIGHLAND, SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
S.F.'s stance on military gains enemies
City bans trips to land of 'kooks' in wake of supervisor's resolution
Peter Fimrite, Chronicle Staff Writer
Sunday, February 19, 2006

Highland, San Bernardino County -- The faded sign outside Kay's Cafe in the city of Highland sports a cartoon caricature of a grinning chef holding a frying pan.

City officials, who use the drab yellow diner as a kind of impromptu town center, are looking a lot like the diminutive chef on the sign these days as they hold San Francisco's feet to the fire.

The prod that woke this bedroom community at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains, whose 2005 population city officials estimate at 50,860, was a decision by San Francisco voters to pass an advisory measure banning military recruiters from schools.

Calling San Franciscans a bunch of "kooks and nuts" and castigating supervisors for their "tomfoolery," the City Council unanimously approved a resolution "prohibiting the expenditure of city funds for attending conferences, training seminars and/or workshops to be held in the City of San Francisco."

I for one am glad they are boycotting. Not only do our fine local stores not need the pittance that Highlanders could afford to spend (see Highland's demographic tables), besides, what would the local Wal-Mart do if they all came up here looking to buy their Billy Basses and Franklin Mint collectible plates?

2. I love this line: "...as they hold San Francisco's feet to the fire."
Because I'm certain that SF is really feeling the heat over this decision.

3. Let's compare
San Francisco's housing prices with Highland's, as well as per capita income of SF v Highland. Oh, and don't forget the percentage of those with at least a bachelors degree. We'll see who's the real kook.

6. Not that that matters...
...after all Daniel McGeee probably has no bachelor's degree, and yet he seems smarter than the Highland City Council...

4. Gee...I know....let's all send emails to Highland
and tell them that, in response to their knee-jerk unAmerican support for a fascist dictatorship, we are passing the word all over the country to avoid visiting Highland, California. . .oh yeah. . .like anyone drops by that city anyway.

Hmm..maybe we should send them to the Chamber of Commerce. . .and look to see if they might have any conventions coming up that aren't wingnut-oriented.

5. Send them recruiting brochures to their high schools instead.
Then they'll figure it out.

7. San Bernardino used to be a liberal/union county, although back when I
was there, even then it had its kook elements ("Christian Anti-Communist Crusade" tent meetings out in the desert; home of McDonald's, the John Birch Society, and the Hell's Angels). Now it has a highly corrupt Republican tyranny--think Ohio--and the most rigged elections in California.

And the thing is, nobody would want to go THERE for lavish lobbying junkets. EVERYBODY wants to go to San Francisco, because San Francisco has class and beauty, and has maintained a high level of livability, whereas San Bernardino--which used to be a beautiful place with orange groves, vineyards, green fields and see-able mountains--is now part of hot, smog-filled, paved-over, overcrowded, ticky tacky horror zone that stretches from L.A. almost to San Diego, south, and Long Beach, west.

So let them go to Salt Lake City or Las Vegas for their taxpayer-paid vacations! They can wallow in cleansed repression, or tits, ass, alcohol and gambling. They deserve the worst--old farts sitting around, kibitzing on how to promote young people getting torn to shreds in Iraq. Jeez.

--------------------------------------

Throw Diebold and ES&S election theft machines into 'Boston Harbor' NOW!--before all of California becomes wretched San Bernardino!

9. This boycott instigated by Highland residents will almost certainly
cripple San Francisco.

Bring it to its knees.

It' all over you damned liberals out there in the Bay Area! You hear? You're all FINISHED!

10. Highland might as well add
every big city in the U.S. to its boycott list. New York and Chicago have also followed suit in banning recruiters from high school. Highland doesn't mind the recruiters lying to high schoolers in telling them they won't have to go to Iraq.
