Washington Post reports Sago Mine had numerous safety violations.
Edited on Wed Jan-04-06 03:55 AM by Cascadian
It has been reported that the Sago Mine in W. Virginia had numerous safety violations that go back years. Faulty or inadequate tunnel supports. A dangerous buildup of flammable coal dust among others.

And the coal mining industry want self-regulation????

I hope somebody will have to answer to these problems.

1. The mining companies play a shell game
The new owner will declare innocence because he just acquired the company. They are all in cahoots and it's a big corporate shell game. They've done it for decades and the same players are involved.

2. Yep, that's exactly what they're claiming.
Sago, a relatively small mine that listed 145 employees last year, was operated by Anker West Virginia Mining Co. until two months ago, when it was purchased by International Coal Group Inc. "Much of the bad history you're talking about was beyond our reach and ability to control," company chief executive Bennett K. Hatfield said yesterday. "But there's been dramatic improvement, and I think regulatory agencies will confirm that."

What I don't understand is, if they just purchased this mine, what happened to the "due diligence" that every company does before buying another business? I can't see how they possibly could claim they didn't know these violations existed! If they didn't know, they didn't do their job before the purchase!!!

4. And if the mine was unsafe
why not shut it down until they make it safer?
