1. They may say the reason for the rage is the cartoon controversy

but I can't help but think that the photos from Abu Graib has also been a factor. Both the cartoons and the prisoner abuse show a distain for Islam, but I can't help but think that the latter is the real underlying reason for the outrage. Why should AP not say so? Because calling all this violence in response to the cartoons only means they don't have to discuss the prisoner abuse again.

Edited to add: I think I read here yesterday that a film about some fellows who were captured and sent to Gitmo just came out, or is about to come out. Could this also be a factor in the outrage? Look at the effigies of the Western leaders.

2. The Film is about The Tipton Three
I hope it is shown here in the states...

<snip>

The film tells the story of the three British Muslims, from Tipton in the Midlands, who went to Pakistan to arrange a wedding, travelled to Afghanistan and were transported to Guantanamo Bay.

They were held there without trial for more than two years before charges were dropped and they were released in March 2004.

Dramatised scenes, charting their journey, are interspersed with interviews with the men themselves, who explain what happened to them and how they felt.

The film depicts the Tipton Three's treatment at the detention camp

"I don't think the film is anti-American because there are plenty of Americans who are against Guantanamo Bay too," says Michael Winterbottom.

"But the very fact that this camp exists is shocking.

3. Could be the US version for us citizens. Make sure we don't
think that our government torturing and murdering people have anything to do with riots.
