ALL drunks questioned by police say they had "One Beer"

1. When I stopped the subject I immediately noticed that his eyes

were bloodshot. He had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. I noticed that the man was incontinent as well. I immediately administered a field sobriety test (counting backwards from 100 by 2s; toe-heel walking of a straight line; backbends followed by finger to nose touching) which the subject failed miserably.

On advising the subject of the need for a breathalyzer the subject, in a slurred voice, maintained that he "had jusht one beer".

3. Agreed

A guy I dated in college worked in the Coast Guard, and he told me how they'd question people who got stopped for BWIs (boating while intoxicated).

CG: How many beers did you have? 10 or 12? 7 or 8? 4 or 5?
Boater: Oh, yeah, just 4 or 5...

People always pick the lowest option offered. Often, 4 or 5 is plenty to be over the legal limit...

You think maybe you can talk your way out of this. And here's what your panicked brain comes up with, five words guaranteed to do you no good:

I only had two beers.

The "two beers" line has been uttered so often that it's a joke among police officers. In 20 years of patrolling highways, Virginia State Police Trooper L.L. Parker has heard that slurred lie more times than she can remember.

"I don't know of any officer out here who, if you tell them you only had two beers, they'll tell you, "Okay, then, have a nice night,' " Parker said, chuckling. "But drunks, for whatever reason, they say it all the time."

"I guess they think two is the magic number," said Trooper Parker, chuckling again. "If you had three, you must have a drinking problem or something. . . . But if you only had two, then you must not be all that drunk."

"Two beers," said Elizabeth Wingo, a supervisor in the D.C. attorney general's office. "Everyone says that. Then they come in and blow a point-one-four."

5. Cheney had one beer alright, but not only one.

When you have only one beer, it doesn't take a full day to sober up like it did him.

As drunk as he most likely was, we're lucky he didn't knock off half the hunting party plus the ambulence driver.
