27. This absolutely is the correct forum-I think Air America Radio would love
Edited on Mon Feb-20-06 02:06 PM by Zinfandel
to find a place in NYC for Malloy...Mike is the best, no one even close...AAR has great numbers, but still needs help, since as Mike mentioned, rich liberals certainly won't help...as rich conservatives do for right-wing radio, because they receive something in return, propaganda that will help them exploit for profit...Liberals don't recive the same, it becomes more of a straight donation (if they indeed donated).

Support& Donate to AAR, it will help spread liberal radio!

I don't listen to the radio very much, so this is news to me! Just crazy. He was one of the few I ever tuned into.

4. He said it was for purely financial reasons
Traditionally, his time-slot has been an advertiser's graveyard. Nobody makes money on a 10p.m.-1a.m. show.

So, they found a show that would give them a tiny net profit and a slightly better rating for advertisers.

Now he did tell us not to get upset, UNLESS Air America doesn't manage to find a NYC station in a timely manner.

Still, I would like to listen to Mike, too. I can't hear any Air America radio except for a weak signal from Ohio. A NY, NJ or CT station would be great.

and will wreck your good night's sleep too
then it broke down (slept on top of it once to many)

I used to get Mike from Benburch's excellent site, then listen to it before I fell asleep.

I miss that to be honest, so I feel your pain.

9. I've completely given up on Air America.....
I never tune in any more. I used to listen to Morning Sedition but since they Got rid of Mark Maron I have no interest. Everything left on that station falls to one of the 2 extremes. Either Springer and Franken's "I respect your opinion" mealy mouthed concilliatory approach, or Randi's yelling, cram it down your throat, whatever you want to call her approach. Those may be for others but I just personally don't find any interest in listening to them.

The fact is that none of the programs on there tell me anything I don't already find out several hours before hand on the internet or elsewhere. Which is fine, but then I would like to be entertained. Maron and Riley used to do that. Chuck D., Liz, and Rachel Maddow used to do that. I could listen to all oft ehm and even if they were talking about stuff I already knew about they did it with humor and insight and sarcasm and subtlety and I really liked that. Even if it didn't "inform" me it entertained me.

Now that all of those shows are gone I find no reason to tune in.

20. I have no facts whatsoever.
If you want my opinion?

Well, I know firsthand how hard it is to get the Right Wingers who own almost all radio stations to even SELL you the time for a Liberal program.

They can be hemorrhaging money like a shooting victim does blood and still no amount of waving dollar bills in front of them will buy you any airtime.

So, will Mike's show be back on the NYC air soon? I can't think so. Eventually? Probably. But that might be a couple of years. Likely after the "Satellite Sisters" show fails.

35. one of the reasons i think AAR should be buying stations...
no matter how small the stations are. it is better to own your own station than fight ideologues for any air time. it's just as you say, they'll refuse their money just because they are conservative. even if it is some piddly-ant belly-up college radio station, it'd still be their station. as is the logic of a capitalist society, it's always better to own than to rent, right? and there's no shame starting small in ownership.

i also think that they are paying waaaay to much for franken. unfiltered and morning sedition were great shows and i'm still sad that they are gone. i love randi, malloy, and majority report, but jerry and franken, who are entertaining, tend to be too inexperienced radio for me. i'm stunned how well sam seder has taken to radio. i still miss chuck d (though he has some other show now, i forget its name), and the weekend lineup i usually end up ignoring even though when i catch any of it i find that it's great stuff.

i think that instead of trying to expand in random cities everywhere they should save $, pick a certain large market, and start buying tiny stations around that metro area. rent as an absolute last resort.

15. we are of a similar opinion on this one...
I usually just listen during commercial breaks on the local sports radio station. I don't care for sports (at all) but at least the people on that station are entertaining. Air America very rarely keeps me listening for more than a few minutes at a time.

The tape delay mentioned above is one large reason for not listening for very long in the evenings, but it's mostly Randi's style that prevents me from listening to her show for more than a few minutes at a time. I'm willing to try again the next day, but it doesn't seem to get better. I just don't care for opposing viewpoints to be filibustered out of existence and that's what she does every time she takes a call from someone who's not saying it exactly the way she would. That style is fine for right-wing radio, but I expect a more intelligent approach from progressives.

It just seems like Air America continues to evolve into the left-wing version of right-wing radio. If that's what people want, I guess they're filling a need. But I hoped Air America would rise above the crap that passes for talk radio and do it in an intelligent, proper manner.

16. Don't get me wrong, I like AAR (and will support it)
But lately I've just been finding myself tuning out of talk radio, all together in favour of news oriented shows (BBC, CBC, NPR).

I'll listen to Mike and Rachel, sometimes, but usually I just cannot take the bickering and yelling. Just give me the news; don't tell me how to think.

29. XM radio
Edited on Mon Feb-20-06 03:38 PM by high density
I finally had to break down and buy a subscription here. My "local" Air America station is AM daytime only, plus even in the daytime I can barely hear it. My little XM radio is a bit more portable than the internet stream is, though the radio requires an external antenna to receive the signal whether at home or in the car. As a bonus I get a lot (60+) of music stations, about four of which I regularly listen to. The sound quality is generally quite marginal, but it beats distant AM radio signals by a long shot.

What bothers me is that in the early days of AAR, Al Franken said time and again on his show that Air America would require each affiliate to carry its content in full and they would not allow them to pick and choose what programs to air. I think a few months after that some stations started carrying just bits and pieces of AAR (desperate for money I guess?) It's quite sad though that the WLIB "flagship" station of AAR has been so troubled from the start.
