People in Podunk, Arkansas and FarmCenter, Iowa ready to give up freedoms |
|
Edited on Mon Feb-20-06 11:14 AM by kentuck
..if they can have a little safety. This amazes me! As if they would be the ones the terrorists would go after. They fear they might lose their cows and moonshine? Sometimes it makes you want to shout, "Get real, people!"
(Edit: this is a general reference to many C-SPAN callers who are so afraid of the terrorists)

taught our HISTORY....have not shared the passion, courage and intelligence of our founding generation. Do they even have civics classes anymore.....instructional information on how government works? We used to take a Modern History class in high school. We'd have newspapers from all over the country....and we'd discuss all aspects of the headline and front page stories.
I went to a week of the American Legion Auxiliary's Girl State....it made a huge impression on me when we spent the week organizing town and state governments. Fabulous program that should be modeled on a larger scale.
We should have more expectations from our citizens who've been too lazy, complacement and easily brain-washed.

Go online and check your local school district and your state curriculum standards. I would be surprised if they don't teach History or Civics.

16. C'mon, don't you watch C-Span? |
|
I've heard those type of callers.
I wouldn't equate them with all Iowans or Arkansawers, but the ones who call in DO sound that way.

the callers irritate me so much.
I don't have as much patience for fools as I had in the past.
Their idiocy has done too much damage to the country.

7. Actually, does it ever occur to anyone that if the terrorists wanted |

to really drive fear home, they would strike somewhere small and ordinary. Just to make the point that they can get to anyone anywhere anytime. I don't rule out anything. Why should you?

8. Not ALL people in Iowa feel that way! |
|
I watched Sen. Bayh last night on Road to the WH on cspan. He did a very short speech, but the rest of the program was a get together with a panel of women , and a third was a breakfast. He did a lot of just plain conversation with them. I have no idea how big or small the Dems are in Iowa, but the ones I heard last night sure weren't willing to give up their freedons for anyone!

17. It's OK. I know what you meant, although there are probably many |
|
places in both states that would qualify as "Podunk" or "Farmcenter".
There are dumbsh#$ Republicans in every state.
There is a lot of irony in the fact that the places most likely to actually be attacked voted for Kerry. I think the Democrats actually should point that out more often.
When I do the Zogby e-mail surveys, it always seems odd to me that I have to pick the same city size for where I live as do people living in NYC, Chicago or LA. The largest choice is - over 100,000 people.

19. Me too -- And Southeastern Iowa is no hotbed of conservatism |
|
There are pockets, but this half of the state is pretty blue, including the bluest county in the midwest that derives its blueness NOT from a minority population -- Johnson Co., IA. This place is pretty fucking cool, IMHO. The liberals here are far more progressive, laid-back, community involved and into alternative energy, local consumption and seeking out responsible consumerism, than any of the liberal Seattleites that I know.

But some people seem to feel like that....? I was only commenting in a general way about how people in certain places in this country are so fearful that they are willing to give up their freedoms when their fears are totally irrational. Sorry. I should have said Des Moines and Little Rock instead of Podunk and FarmCenter.

and right across the Mississippi River, actually on the river, is a major armament manufacturer. The Rock Island Arsenal, an actual military base. I think that terrorists may actually be interested in something like that. So not all of us Iowans are hicks and rubes. But I'd still rather live here than in any big city. Less hustle and bustle, less crime, and no terrorism. Wait, we have crime, we have hustle and bustle, we still don't have terrorists though. Nor do we want any. We want our freedom as well. We like it and are willing to fight for it if we have to.

20. Plus there's the nucular power plant in Palo Alto, and |
|
a gazillion anhydrous ammonia and fertilizer tanks sitting around unguarded along side fields. Although I do think Iowa is low on the list for terrorists (I live in Iowa too and love it here), it gets on my nerves when people from metropolitan areas tend to think there's nothing out here but a few rubes and some fields. When the government wants to hide something, it puts stuff in the hinterlands, not necessarily in middle of the largest city.

the last time we fought anyone for anyone's freedom was about 16 years ago. If the administration told you they had to listen to your phone line to keep terrorists out of Rock Island--that's OK?

26. It's interesting that although NYC was attacked on 9/11 |
|
people in other metro areas are probably among the first to reject domestic surveillance, and people in rural areas feel more threatened by the potential for terrorist attacks.
Just an impression.

I reread my post and I don't think I said anything about wanting to be spied on. Don't put words in my mouth. I just said we are willing to fight for our freedom, not in Iraq, which is obviously illegal, nor with warantless spying. Fuck I'm tired of people twisting what I say. Now I know how some politicians must feel.

18. These people need a Karesch Jones, Phelps, Erhard, Moon - they |
|
revere beyond the foundation of the teachings to the man - their lord. They are psychologically in need of a lord. Rationality is their weakest strength. It starts with uni-human trust that disallows the structure of truth revelations.

the only Podunk I know of is in Massachusettes. But I will say that some folks near Dogpatch and Possum Trot have expressed alarm over the wiretapping. The religious nutcases are even starting to rethink their notion of Bush being the Second Coming.

32. I disagree. Blowing up a store in Peoria would be devestating. |
|
The resulting amount of fear, panic, suspicion and paranoia would be a major psycological blow to our nation. Driving home the fact that nowhere in America is safe would be a big victory for any terrorist organization.
