16. Quick note on foldmenow
When I setup the farm I thought each box needed a unique identifier and so I assigned each one a number. Now that I know they don't need uniques, I've put them all on one name, foldmenow.

9. When we get enough people to join to make a serious run at it
Edited on Mon Feb-20-06 02:52 PM by Mabus
Right now they are way ahead in terms of active CPUs. They have 915 and we've got 304. They've taken over some computer labs and co-opted as many computers as they can get a hold of right now. One guy is running over fifty computers (while their owners are away - or so he admitted). We've pretty much have been trying to recruit by posting and keeping the interest alive. We're counting on people power, not unauthorized co-opting of others' CPUs.

If we want to catch them we need just 1.1% of the current DU membership each running one computer. In my household we're running two. I know there are a lot of two+ computer households in the DU community. If we could get just 1% of the total number of DU'ers signed up and running at least two computers, we'd not only catch the freepers, we'd leave them in the dust.

I'm glad that the DU-freeptard rivalry is being put to good use for once.

33. There seem to be some posts missing from this thread...
Edited on Tue Feb-21-06 12:38 AM by Wrinkle_In_Time
... I swear that I read some posts here earlier that no longer exist. That's probably understandable, but also a shame. When I followed a link in one of these missing posts, I discovered a wildly entertaining (albeit poorly formatted) discussion forum wherein:
  1. The owner of that forum totally dismissed F@H: "Sorry, I don't open my bank account to the widows of Nigerian Officials who want me to hold 10,000,000 bucks for them and I don't open my CPU to Stanford mad scientists. Just a flaw in my character I guess.".
  2. Their forum admins started side-lining such discussions.
  3. Some people on that forum seemed to finally see the small luddite behind the curtain; others just swallowed another gulp of Kool-Aid. The wimpering was hilarious.
  4. One participant stated that he was using computers at his place of employment without authorisation: "Seven of the CPUs are home machines, all the others are at work where I use only those that would go unnoticed in case of a crash. My boss (MIS Director) tolerates me but if something fails and there's a whiff of folding near it he would have me pull it out of all of them. I've been using this approach since mid-2003." -- there speaks a member of the "party of responsibility". This person should be fired.
  5. Their highest-producing person refers to the computer s/he uses as "new acquisitions" (complete with scare quotes) and makes allusions to said computers not belonging to him/her.
Yeah, there's the spirit :sarcasm:

While it would be gratifying if the DU Folding team were able to add more people and processing to the Folding cause than these people, this should not be done through immoral or unethical means. Contribute what you can. Don't steal from anyone else. It's for a good cause.

EDIT: completed the quote from the site owner, because it's just better when left intact.

11. When we triple our active members and daily output, we may catch
up to them in a matter of months.

This chart shows that we're ahead in terms of new members, and have about 3/4 the number of active members, but their daily output is just under 3x ours.

I like looking at the stats here to get an idea of how we moving up relative to our own performance.

Bottom line: DU #571 (304 CPUs) FR #212 (915 CPUs)

Edited on Mon Feb-20-06 05:57 PM by Mabus
That little film hit me between the eyes. One of my best friends just lost her husband to cancer (last week) and the husband of another friend of mine has Parkinson's Disease. These aren't the only two people I know that are facing catastrophic familial medical problems. I know and have known a lot of people who would benefit from F@H research.

Everyone can help researchers understand (and maybe find cures or prevent) these diseases by using their spare CPU cycles to fold protein simulations.

39. Thanks
I guess it hit me because of the recent cancer death of my friend's husband. It was an aggressive and invasive form of renal cancer that had spread throughout his body before he was diagnosed in December. Over two months we literally saw him wasting away before our eyes. I couldn't save him, I couldn't save my mom when she had cancer but I can do something to help others in the future.

Thank you for sharing that little film. It really hit home. I will never hear Rod Stewart singing "Forever Young" again without thinking about Folding.

Keep on Folding!

18. Come on, DU! Join the team!
As liberals, among many things we value quality health care, scientific progress, use of technology for humanitarian purposes, compassion for others, and collective, unselfish effort for the common good.

The DU Folding@Home team is working together to produce tangible results consistent with our values. It's free, it's easy, you won't even know it's working, and the results might one day save your life or that of a loved one.

It doesn't matter how fast your computer is--every single folding CPU makes a difference. Using an old laptop and this machine, I've gone from zero to a top 20 producer on the DU team in 8 days, and it took no time at all to download and install the program on the two machines. After that, it's maintenance-free.

So little effort, for such a big potential payoff. Won't you consider joining us today?

Thanks for the thread and the nice flash link, Mia.

K&R!!!

Welcome to the folding team.

57. We moved up two since your post.
I am surprised that our ranking is still growing so fast.

Remember, it isn't just the number of CPU's, it is the quality (speed and power) of CPU's. 500 CPU's from one team may not be equal 500 on another team. DU'ers may have, on average, newer computers. It seems like we have done a good job educating people on our team.
