PayPal problems
We keep getting e-mails from paypal saying that a new e-mail address has been added to our account and if it isn't valid we are supposed to respond. I looked at the first one but they wanted credit card numbers and other personal info. It screamed scam to me but they just keep coming and always with different "new" e-mail addresses that were supposedly added. Any clues or advice would be welcome.

2. It is a scam! Don't go there
Might look into whether your state has any sort of internet fraud unit to report such things to.

3. This is called a "spoof" email. It's a trick to get your info.
On the PayPal page there is a link for reporting spoofs.

5. Anything asking through email for cc numbers is a scam
PayPal doesn't work that way and I think they sent out a warning about this kind of stuff once.

Maybe I'm wrong but that seems to be what I remember.

6. PayPal Spam
There is a lot of PayPal and eBay spam going around, and has been popping up for several years. Do not click on anything in those emails or give them any information. Forward them to either Spoof@Paypal.com or Spoof@eBay.com, depending on which site they "supposedly" came from.

I used to forward these phishers, but now I get so many of them (sometimes 2-3 per day), it's like fighting a losing battle.

26. Oh, I've given up myself. I just thought one from someone new might help.
Getting multiples from people may not help much, but it might help track things somehow if someone sends in their first scam email.

Here's a link you can go to if you want to learn how to spot the difference between bogus and real PayPal emails.

11. It is a scam.
Paypal will always address their users by name, so if it starts out "Dear Paypal User", that's the first tipoff. They will also not ask for personal info in email like that.

What you're supposed to do is turn on full headers (so you can see the path)and forward the message (not as an attachment) to spoof@paypal.com.

Depending on the message, sometimes they send you a canned reply, other times you'll get an actual composed email message back with someone's name whom you can call at PayPal. BTW, our experiences with them is that they have very good customer service.

Don't fall for the scams - Paypal and Ebay both have those spoof@.... addresses to send scam email to.

14. The really really SCARY one
Is when it tells you you've bought something for several hundred dollars and you freak out, what the fuck, and think your spouse or kid has bought something, and what the hell were they thinking, and click on it and just when you click into your account, the lightbulb goes off...

oh shit I've been had.

Never open your Paypal account from your email. Never ever ever ever.

18. It's more than a scam
It's an attempt to get your banking info. Delete it immediately and try to set up your spam filters with words to block any ohers from coming.

Most of all, DO NOT open anything in that email.

If you ever have any doubt about others that try similar phishing, go directly to the website of the company by typing it into your search bar. In your account, most will have a record of emails they sent you. You will then know what is valid from the company itself.

Many financial information seekers are sending emails like you received saying your Ebay account has been suspended.

19. Here are two Web Sites with good overviews of the Paypal scams:
http://www.fightidentitytheft.com/paypal_scam.html

...and another...

http://haacked.com/archive/2005/06/03/4004.aspx

Both have screen shots and samples of the fake data. The scam is built on its ability to send authentic-looking e-mails and direct you to fraudulent sites to "fix" your account data.

pure, evil bullshit.

If you have any doubts at all EVER when receiving any kind of 'alert' from a place you do business with, open a sepaerate browser, type in that company's URL and check your account that way.

NEVER click a link within the email and NEVER provide our personal info that way.

22. It's a scam
It's a scam. I get these several times a month. If it has a link, paste the link into your browser instead of clicking on it since where it takes you by clicking is usually different than what the link looks like it's directing you to. If you view the source the scammer usually puts some cute phrase in there so you can definitely tell it is a scam.

I've noticed a new variation where the whole email is actually a graphic and you can click anywhere and it takes you to the scam website.

Paypal says they will never ask you to enter your credit card number.

One thing you should look out for is password changes. Sometimes some scammer will get your password and the first indication is a password change before they empty out your account. Keep in mind that you should never click on a link; just type in PayPal's website in your browser.

Finally, I recommend you have a checking account dedicated to PayPal. Paypal can and will withdraw money from your account if you get ruled against in a dispute. Plus, never keep money except for the minimum in your PayPal account.

similar for eBay. I just forward them to spoof@ebay.com and spoof@paypal.com.

If it's "for real" they will get back to you immediately. Otherwise - you get an e-mail within a few hours saying "This was not sent by us. Disregard it."

31. If you receive any questionable emails from PayPal you should
forward them to spoof@paypal.com. I have received a few lately and forwarded them and gotten a reply from PayPal that they are scams. Don't open any links in the email until you have confirmed with PayPal whether or not it is legitimate.

33. I just got one of those.
It warned me of a "possible" or "impending" suspension of my account because of possible unauthorized charges. Not likely since I've used my PayPal account in the last few days with no problems, nor has anyone but me been attempting to make charges to my account.

What I did: I logged into my PayPal account, but NOT through the link in the e-mail! I logged in via "My eBay" and used my password. Then following PayPal's instructions for these cases, I forwarded the e-mail to them at spoof@paypal.com.
