Cheney Resignation Would Present Advantages, Problems, for Both Sides
Friday, February 17, 2006
By Martin Frost

Some 27 years ago Dick Cheney and I started our careers in elective politics together — he as a freshman congressman from Wyoming and I as a freshman congressman from Texas.

Though the vice president and I often don’t agree on policy matters, I have a high regard for his intelligence and political abilities. However, the unfortunate hunting accident in Texas this past weekend and the clumsy way in which Cheney disclosed news of the incident to the media are just the latest in a mounting list of controversies surrounding him.

While the shooting of a member of his hunting party has been declared an accident, the verdict is still out on his role in the leaking of classified intelligence information by his former chief of staff.

With Republicans as well as Democrats criticizing and questioning the vice president’s actions, I think the question of whether Mr. Cheney will complete his full term in office is an appropriate and legitimate line of inquiry. Certainly, people are starting to whisper; television pundits and newspaper columnists have raised the issue. It is not unreasonable to consider the political consequences of a Cheney resignation.

There are at least three reasons why Cheney might step down before the end of his term in January of 2009:

1. It's official...
they are trying to keep this story alive and kicking as a diversion from something or some things far more serious.

7. The little case that won't go away.
As hard as the Neo Fascists have tried to bury the V. Plame case, they have not succeeded. In fact, this case may bring down Bush and Cheney. Impeachment is required for both if Congress will actually do what is required of them: Defend and protect The Constitution of the USA.

3. Martin Frost is a long-time Democrat and I'm not surprised
to see him musing about this question. I am surprised to see it on Fox News, though. Hmmm.

13. Martin Frost signed up with FoxNews after losing his congressional seat
as a result of Tom DeLay's gerrymandering. A Dallas Democrat.

9. Faux Always Reports What Karl Rove Says To Report
I think that means that Rove is trying to throw Cheney under the bus --
an extremely sensible strategy, especially if he may be testifying against Cheney at some point.

11. it's a rovian trial balloon
see if talk of resignation and/or impeachment increases sympathy for the old asshole. If it works this time, count on it being drug out again when the wolves start to close in on Bushco. In fact, Jonah Goldberg made this very assertion about a month ago - the best thing that could happen to Bushco would be to start impeachment proceedings - the approval ratings would immediately ramp up in sympathy. Or some bullshit like that - I rarely find Goldberg make much sense.

20. I agree.
This is not a ploy to help Cheney survive. It is part of a campaign to put him out to pasture.

6. A resignation would seem to set the stage for the crowning of...
an heir apparent, someone blessed by * to continue the legacy (dictatorship). Jeb maybe? Even if it was McCain, it would be a huge jumpstart.

22. Same guy that left 500 tons of high explosives unguarded !
The Iraqi insurgents support Tommy Franks! Franks gave them all that free HE to blow up our soldiers.

Tommy Franks knew about the ammo depot before we went into Iraq and he still failed to secure it.

Franks is an incompetent asshole. Just the kind of guy that the Bush corporate cabal loves.

How about Michael Brown to handle a business move
or
Gonzales to represent you in a lawsuit
or
Chertoff as a new ceo
or
Ashcroft to be your corporate lawyer

14. Cheney's poll numbers
for what its worth, were already pretty low before Fudgate, and there was speculation before this incident about retiring early for "health reasons". I think there's blood in the water.

Cheney will just laugh at him.

Then he'll say "Now get the hell out of my office".
