1. I believe it's a federation of monarchal states
...each one ruled by an Emir, I'd presume.

4. Thanks for the link
I find it interesting that there are no direct election of leaders, that the leaders are in complete control with the legislative branch merely there to look over laws but cannot change them, and the judiciary is appointed by the leadership.

Now didn't Bush say he supported democracy in the Middle East? Or was he planning to change our democracy to fit the UAE?

BFEE could probably use another money laundering department, especially if there is a crackdown in Congress!

"the UAE is a drug transshipment point for traffickers given its proximity to Southwest Asian drug producing countries; the UAE's position as a major financial center makes it vulnerable to money laundering; anti-money-laundering controls improving " from Pavulon's link to CIA Factbook

UAE Prince Mohammed bin Zayid / Zayed linked to Bin Laden & 9/11

Mohammed bin Zayid, the UAE's Crown Prince and Chief of Staff, is tied to al-Qaeda yet regularly meets with Bush Administration Officials to discuss the prevention of terrorism.

The United Arab Emirates, one of the U.S. government’s closest allies in the War on Terror, has a new King and Crown Prince. Earlier this month the UAE’s long-time ruler passed away at the age of 86.

"On February 10th, Clarke reported that a top UAE official had vehemently denied that high-level UAE officials were in Afghanistan."

"Evidence subsequently confirmed that high-level UAE officials had been there."

7. And this is who runs Dubai
Edited on Mon Feb-20-06 09:20 PM by Emit
now, following the death of his older brother not long ago:

Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the architect of the city state's development boom, succeeded his older brother as ruler of the emirate, one of the seven that form the UAE federation.

The accession of Sheikh Mohammed, who is defence minister of the UAE, was automatic, officials said.

The succession was expected to be smooth as Sheikh Maktoum maintained a low profile during his rule, preferring to allow his younger brothers to run the day-to-day affairs of Dubai.

I read elsewhere that he also is Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and in addition to being the Ruler of Dubai.
