Bush: U.S. on Verge of Energy Breakthrough
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=1641994

By DEB RIECHMANN

MILWAUKEE Feb 20, 2006 (AP)— Saying the nation is on the verge of technological breakthroughs that would "startle" most Americans, President Bush on Monday outlined his energy proposals to help wean the country off foreign oil.

Less than half the crude oil used by refineries is produced in the United States, while 60 percent comes from foreign nations, Bush said during the first stop on a two-day trip to talk about energy.

Some of these foreign suppliers have "unstable" governments that have fundamental differences with America, he said.

"It creates a national security issue and we're held hostage for energy by foreign nations that may not like us," Bush said.

5. Discussed earlier - two DUer camps
Earlier Discussion: www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2121037

Two camps:

1. Those who regularly follow DU:Energy Environment Forum - he'll hype the breakthrough of the day. (I.e., repackaging old research).

2. Those who do not regularly follow DU:Energy Environment Forum - like his earlier Mars Landing.

10. It's all about his trip to NREL tomorrow.
National Renewable Energy Lab located in Golden CO.

NREL just got cut another 40 million, right after Chimpy's SOU address that talked about how we had to wean ourselves from oil. So now he is trying to skate through his visit tomorrow with all these grand words on renewable energy (as well as a reinstatement of the 37 people who were laid off).

It's all politics as usual. Nothing to see here.

23. Oil shale is never going to happen - I saw the Shell R&D head speak
Full exploitation of the western slope kerogen reserves in Colorado alone would require building electric generating capacity equal to that of the the entire state of Colorado - tens of billions of dollars just for electrical generating capacity.

So, what are these plants going to burn? Natural gas? Not bloody likely? Coal? Well, maybe, but there's substantial demand already in place pretty much everywhere in America. Nuclear? Well, maybe, but oil would have to be about $175 a barrel to make the likely $25 billion investment needed for a fair-sized nuclear plant profitable.

Oh, and in the Shell presentation - the test site they'd successfully tested their new tech on was a square ten feet on a side.

I'd say they have a little ways to go.

13. Bush's Energy Breakthroughs
Bush suggests your whole family sleep in the same bed to keep warm.
Bush says, call Mr. Chavez, maybe he can help.
Bush to annex Iran's South West province.
Bush to make all roads downhill.
Bush lays off NREL staff to save their commute costs.
Bush keeps yapping and country stays warm, laughing its ass off.
Bush pushes Tax breaks for even bigger trucks.

Gonzales outlaws 1st and 2nd laws of thermodymamics...
...and Bush mandates stupidity testing for all colleges, so people buy his bullshit.

17. Translation
Dick and Karl and Bodman and this Rainwater guy are telling me we are really in the shit about this energy thing.

Hell, Dick's so upset he went out and got tanked last weekend and accidently shot some guy he was hunting with. Ke-rist on a crutch, like I needed him falling off the wagon right about now.

So, Karl tells me I need to go out and speechify about energy so when the shit hits the fan this summer it will look like we are doing something, instead of sittin around with our thumbs up our asses waitin for those Iraq prospects to come in. I asked Karl if we could just blame it on Clinton, but he just shook his head. Hell, it's always worked before, but you know Karl.

So, Karl tells me to talk about nuk-ler power, cause the money boys like it. And talk about hybrids, cause that always gets those lefties excited.

Shit, now Rummy sez we have to go sit on Nigeria's oil, cause the natives are getting restless. Dick, get the hell away from that bottle . . .

21. I think it's a boondoggle
He'll claim this great discovery is about to be made, they just need another few billion to make it ergonomic (or whatever). And then he'll announce how he's just approved a no-bid contract to this breakthrough company. You guessed it! Halliburton!!!

It's a total setup. This is why he put it in his SOTU speech - watch, nothing substantial will be shown, only promises of greatness and dire need for more money to put into this new enterprise. And also watch - You can count on Halliburton getting this money.

24. Space weapons?
His choice of battery company is rather strange. The specific battery system he's hyping is one which Johnson Controls teamed up with a French company Saft to develop. It's not especially great, compared to the nanocrystal li-ion batteries being developed at other counries. For example, Saft's current "power density" on their page is listed as around 700W/kg. That's as low as some NiMH. So I was scratching my head wondering why this company over, say A123 (power density > 3000W/kg) or Makita? Then I noticed that Saft's claim to fame is their batteries work in space. Could be just wanting to funnel money to a well connected vendor, but could also be an attempt to flip the "dual use" paradigm backwards -- develop for "civilian use" in order to apply for military use.

Anyway, if you want to play with the batteries of the future, you'll be able to buy them here in a couple of months (this is the only form they'll be available in for a little while yet.)

26. Oh, that's just Bush.
Always looking for a "cliff-hanger" when things get shitty. Bush just LOVES to keep 'em guessing. He's like a cheap Bob Barker (or whatever his name was) who had a really cheap game show.

There's Bush, in front of the curtain! What will it be? Everybody's biting their nails.

Bush is so obvious, so clownish.

27. The secret energy source is the reason for all the unconstitutional action
engaged in by this Administration.

They're going to attach generators to the spinning corpses of our Founding Fathers. It's estimated that this will provide ample energy to provide for Americans' disproportionate energy consumption.
