Dinner with some fundies last night
Edited on Tue Feb-21-06 09:26 AM by woodsprite
OK, had dinner with the in-laws last night. UGH! They started complaining about having MLK's birthday off and NOT having President's day off. One of my SILs actually said that "That's not MLKs birthday, it's the Oswald/Ray/Sirhan holiday." I was thinking WTF is it with you people! How can my hubby possibly be related to you? I didn't say it since we had 5 little kids at the dinner table.

Next, BIL chirped in and said, yeah, Teddy's (Kennedy) shooter missed his appointment. I said "Wasn't that supposed to be Cheney. I understand he got a deferrment." Then hubby and I started packing our two munchkins up. We didn't get out of there before SIL said she'd rather go shooting with Cheney than riding with Ted. I told her that I'd ride with Teddy in a flash, and I wouldn't have to worry about Cheney either, since he's only interested in offing big Pubby donors who know where the admins bodies are buried ala Funeralgate.

My 5 yo picked up on it all though. We got into the car and he said, "It's really important to vote, right Mom? Because then, you can make sure the people who run the country follow the rules. Rules are important. Pres * doesn't follow the rules, does he? so we need Pres. Kerry." OK so he's still hung up on the 2004 election. ;)

Just had to vent to an understanding ear. Seriously though, have any of you ever heard MLK's holiday referred to as that? I can't even begin to start going thru all the emotions I felt when I actually understood what I heard. I swear these people are possessed. These are the same people that were absolutely vehement in the fact that Johnny Cochran died from brain cancer. Nasty, nasty, hateful people.

Either way, if I get raptured or they get raptured, I won't have to worry about ending up in the same place as them - Thank Gawd!!!

My parents are like that; they bought the lie about him cheating on his wife with a new mistress every other night.

3. I know those hateful folks are you inlaws, but you missed
a golden opportunity. At that crack about Oswald/Ray/Sirhan you really should have mentioned that was the most unchristian thing you've ever heard.

At the very least, it would have shut them up quickly, moved them on to a neutral subject, and you might have had a tolerable time. Your 5 year old would have picked up on that, too.

Oh well, maybe next time.

You do have my condolences. My ex inlaws were stiflingly churchy, but they weren't fundies. I even miss them.

10. Whenever I read a thread like this, it pisses me off...
It's almost as though you're rubbing it in our faces. You tell us all the hateful things your friends/relatives said, and you don't say a word. There's always an excuse. No wonder we cant win. We're all afraid to speak up when it becomes too "inconvenient". Sorry for the rant, but allowing people to preach to you and your family without at least defending your principles is nothing to brag about.

you are so right. i never let these go by. and i dont do it mean or hateful. i jsut say it the way it is. but i never let them go by. someone was talking a homeless in a church being escorted out by cops and they sat there. i dont fget that. i wouldnt have sat there.???????????????

i never just sit there anymore. i never just keep my mouth shut. and if anyone has a problem with it, i say, bush started telling me to shut up after 9/11..... so many people shut up for a long period. dean was the first to not shut up, and then moore, and from then on...... no one is going to fuckin tell me to shut up again. and bush has been working really hard the last four years telling us we are suppose to or we dont love america..... fuck that shit.

35. Liberals have been "politely" silent for 30 years.
The demeaning and slanderous assaults on liberalism (e.g. commies, hippies, freakazoids) have received tacit cooperation from those who apparently try to "pass." For 30 years, I've been reminded of nothing more than German Jews in the 30s who proclaimed "I'm not one of those!" We even have reichszealots like Coulter and Malkin reprising the "how to identify" tactics of the Nazis. It has become so ingrained that we see elected Democrats clustering on the starboard rail of the Party, threatening to capsize it.

Conservatism is nothing but the legislative entrenchment of entitlements for the already-privileged - more wealth for the wealthy and more power for the powerful. Thus it has always been. Liberalism has never been popular, except in retrospect. If it were, it wouldn't be necessary.

Was that before or after Laura Welch Bush blew through a stop sign and killed a former boyfriend?

That's my response if I ever get the opportunity.

6. They're obviously baiting you
But, since they're fundies, I would advise meeting their mean, hateful speech with a stony silence, and then ask them why they are so eager to violate the Apostle Paul's words of Romans 12:18: "Insofar as it is up to you, live peaceably with all." Since they know how much their spiteful words hurt, it's pretty clear that they don't take their Bible very seriously.

Then leave it at that.

Actually, the guy who spoke at our church this weekend gave me
the perfect comeback for their insane babble. He said the and inherant problem with most Fundamental Evangelicals is they are missing the whole biblical point. They should reread the Sermon on the Mount and effectively practice it's principals.

8. I didn't say it since we had 5 little kids at the dinner table.
that is exactly why i would have said something. in grace, kindness, knowledge, a lesson to the children in honor mlk,..... in front of adults. and i would go so far to say to adults, i dont teach my kids hate, ....we honor all people. we love all.

i also dont allow my kids to to be hateful to bush, to peers, to family. even when we dont like someone.... still, we have to honor them. never hate.

now, lol... i will keep reading your post.

in her bonnet that everyone starts taking sides. The hardest thing we have to deal with them isn't this crap, but the fact that they treat our two kids differently from their other grandkids. Our daughter really notices it and it makes her very sad. They will lie to keep my kids from knowing that they take their other grandkids on weekend camping trips, to the movies, etc. Actually though, I still get pi$$ed as Gmom/Gdad for that, but I'm glad I don't have to worry about the brainwashing that would go with it. I feel sorry for Gmom/Gdad because they won't realize until it's too late what great kids we have and our son will be the only one to carry on the family name.

In the meantime, we do family dinner 1x/wk for most weeks, and lay low the rest of the time.

we have that too in our family.

isn't that bad. and my people dont get it. and it is their loss. my family, they are so testosterone and physical. my wimpy reading, glasses, intellectual boys. we have been accused of too intellectual

then, my husbands family. intellectual elitists. doctors lawyers, cape cod.... i am white trailer trash, and projects onto kids. my oldest from the youngest of age recognized the difference. i understand. we now just accept it in our people, and love them anyways. just short times with them, but make it fun

good luck to you. thanks for sharing.

15. my family stopped doing it real quick in front of my kids and family
too. after i got married my husband found out his two younger brothers were gay. my male family are homophobic. had to nip that one real fast. then found a line of black blood in my husband, lol lol. so had the opportunity of in their face, you have a problem with my children......challenge. 2004 campaign was significant because of the ugliness and lying of republicans and "christians"... they really stayed away from me. and then nov 3 2004 they stopped saying a word to me about any of the stuff. anything that would piss me off. they are just now starting to talk to me. we are doing good. being respectful of each other. it is getting a little easier. bush has just done too much wrong. my brother said a couple nights ago, (i was jabbing repugs) "well i am not a republican, i am a libertarian." i literally out loud busted out laughing and said amazing how all the repugs are so embarrassed they are all becoming libertarian.

the stupid on my families side. we really are not bigots. they are just mouths. eveyone they meet, they find good. it is all image. not foundational belief in sinner or less. just a cult like following with no substance.

16. No offense, but you are handling them all wrong.
When I heard you say "One of my SILs actually said that "That's not MLKs birthday, it's the Oswald/Ray/Sirhan holiday."", my first reaction would have been this:

"HA HA HA HA H! OMG That is hysterical! You're funny." (very demeaning, belittling tone of voice).
After they reacted to that, no matter what they say, you reply "Yeah ok, whatever you say" (spin your finger around your ear, the international "crazy person" sign") and wink at your spouse and laugh hysterically.
At this point they will be absolutely pissed.
Then, when SIL said "she'd rather go shooting with Cheney than riding with Ted" I'd reply as follows:
"HA HA HA HA! Still living in the past! No wonder you right-wing nuts a national joke! BWA HA HA HA HA!"
Wait for any reply, follow up with:
"No, seriously, you just compared Dick Cheney shooting a guy in the face to someone dying in an accident in 1969, and you expect people to take you seriously!? BWA HA HA HA HA!"
End with: "Yeah ok, whatever you say" (spin your finger around your ear, the international "crazy person" sign") and wink at your spouse and laugh hysterically again.

That should put an end to their comments from that point onward.

24. these people are obsessed with Ted Kennedy
...brainwashed that he is The Great Satan (Hillary is the great female Satan). Recently I was in a shop and the middle-aged female clerk suddenly lashed out to a customer with "Did you see Ted Kennedy the other day (speech in congress on Alito)? They say B**H can't speak well, but Kennedy was mumbling and slurring like a fool. Hee haw. Hee haw." Her laugh was bitter and dirisive. The customer stared blankly. There was no context for this outburst--it was pure venomous bile, repeated no doubt from RW radio, but this woman had to vomit this on the nearest victim...she just ASSUMED others would be receptive and if not, FU. It was very aggressive. This is a sick obsession.
