I gotta ask a DU spelling question
Is there are reason everybody on DU seems to spell "moron" with a second 'a', e.g. "moran"? What did I miss, lo, those many years ago?

Just along the side or something.
I am very fond of it - and it would prepare all newbies for the "cognitive dissonance" of DU's fave word. :wtf:

Lose is ALWAYS misspelled loose here...I've never quite figured out if it's intentional...but it bugs the heck out of me.

15. alot
That one's my personal pet peeve.

Just for future reference, everyone, there is no such word as "alot." It is properly shown as "a lot" as in "she brought a lot of apples to the picnic." Like this: "a (space) lot." Whew. I feel so much better.

Edited on Tue Feb-21-06 01:04 PM by janeaustin
That's a mistake I never noticed until email came along.

I am always surprised at how often I see "loose" for "lose" from otherwise well-educated folks.

(Edited for typo.)

26. choose vs. chose is another one
ok, I get that lose/loose MIGHT be a freeperism.

But, I'm convinced that people don't know how to use choose/chose.

33. Or "drank" and "drunk".
Incorrect: He has drank the Koolaid.

Correct: He has drunk the Koolaid.

Maybe people are afraid to use the word drunk because they associate it with being sloshed.

40. it's vs. its
I don't think this is a freeperism, just one that a lot (two words!) of people miss, and I see it all the time. Remember that "it's" with the apostrophe is a contraction of "it is", whereas "its", without the apostrophe, is a possessive, meaning "belonging to it."

An easy way to keep them straight is to mentally substitute "it is" any time you see "it's," and see whether it makes sense. Example: "The car lost it's tire" would read "The car lost it is tire." Wrong; you want "its" there, without the contraction. By contrast, "It's raining today" would read "It is raining today." Right.

There's my hair-splitting for the day. :)

Edited on Tue Feb-21-06 12:23 PM by Brotherjohn
... if you revealed yourself to be a "Rocky Horror virgin" (first time seeing the show)?

If we were at Rocky Horror midnight movie in 1980, you'd be getting pelted with rice right about now.

I know you're over 100 posts, but...
