Is this a scam email re: PAYPAL? Help needed, please!
Edited on Tue Feb-21-06 12:53 PM by Wheezy
Sent from service@intl.paypal.com

Here is the text of the email:

Security Center Advisory!

We recently noticed one or more attempts to log in to your PayPal account from a foreign IP address and we have reasons to belive that your account was hijacked by a third party without your authorization. If you recently accessed your account while traveling, the unusual log in attempts may have been initiated by you.

If you are the rightful holder of the account you must click the link below and then complete all steps from the following page as we try to verify your identity.

Click here to verify your account

If you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choise but to temporaly suspend your account.

Thank you for using PayPal!
PayPal Email ID PP697

---------------------------------------------

If I remember correctly, the last time there was a paypal scam, PayPal came out and said they would never have a link for you to click on to verify your account.

I received a different email the other day, saying that 'so and so' has been successfully added to your paypal account. Click here to verify.

I sent that email directly to Paypal's 'suspicious email' place last Thursday, and did not reply or click on anything in either of these emails -- but I haven't heard back from Paypal yet.

Anybody want to confirm that I'm doing the right thing? Even though my gut says 'scam', I still don't want to risk somebody taking control of my account or of Paypal suspending my account. But I noticed a typo in the email, which makes me think it's really a doofus scam.

Thank you--

3. Yes, I get those all the time
The rule of thumb is to *never* click on a link in an email. If you have any doubts, go to your paypal account in the normal way and check it out.

7. I have had similar messages ...
... for months now. They seem to come in tandem with similar messages from eBay; both threaten to suspend these respective accounts.

Here's the problem: I have never had a PayPal account, and I've never even accessed eBay on my computer.

SCAM!

They will reply letting you know this is, indeed, a spoof.

12. Make sure you don't click on
any of the links in e-mails like this. I forwarded a similar e-mail to Paypal recently, and they said that clicking on any link would likely trigger a trojan or a keystroke logger. When you get anything like this, just forward it to eBay or Paypal and then delete it immediately.

It's such a lame attempt anyway - anyone who uses eBay or Paypal knows that logging on to either site from a "foreign IP address" doesn't make a bit of difference at all. I've conducted Paypal transactions from halfway around the world.

The scammers can never spell either and obviously don't have English as a first language.

13. When in doubt, two steps:
1.) assume it's BS, and 2.) run a spell check. A company as big as PayPal would not send anything saying "you leave us no choise but to temporaly suspend your account."

14. NEVER click a clink from an email sent to you
if you get email from paypal, go to paypal's website and navigate there.
DO NOT click on the link "paypal" sends you because there's a good chance it's not from paypal.

it's call phishing and you can expose your account to nefarious individuals.

16. Don't just "believe or not believe," BE SMART and
don't go to the web at all, call the related credit card company direct, grab the phone and CALL your credit card company. This happened to me with one coming by snail mail saying that my credit stance had changed dramatically and I should go to a site to clear it up, implying that my identity had been stolen. Instead I called my #1 credit card, figuring if there was a problem they would know about it, and they said it was indeed a scam and the only change in my credit status was that it had climbed even more. My point is that you have choices besides "believing or not believing" these letters and emails. Call a party whose phone number YOU have chosen and dialed and talk to customer service you know will have some answers. As a matter of fact your credit card company (their number is on the back of the card) would know if Paypal was having issues with your account as they would have charges that you didn't make. AND that makes them the best place to start so you can ge that card stopped, charges reversed, and a new one issued, on the rare likelihood that it has been hijacked. So my advice to repeat once more, USE THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CREDIT CARD, because they really do know everything about your credit risk, how do you think they know so quickly to put the screws to some folks?

17. This is what I do and yes, it's a scam
I sell on ebay and use paypal a lot. I get scam emails almost daily. Ebay or paypal will NEVER ask you to put your personal information in an email, but I like to do a simple little test, hoping it gets back to the people scamming. I type as my password, something like: youasshole or jackass or fuckingidiot. The password is ALWAYS accepted, and I then know the email is a scam. I also forward them immediately to either spoof@ebay.com, or spoof@paypal.com.

A LOT of people fall for these emails, and the scammers are always trying new ones, so it's important to forward them to paypal or ebay.

for an article I'd bid on and agreed not to buy. The buyer wanted me to pay the ebay fees. Click "here".

I haven't been ebaying, didn't bid on this article and didn't click "here".

24. Definately Scam
I get these emails several times a week. My husband and I both got one a few days ago about our Bank of America account. For giggles he even opened the email to look at it. It looked very official. The only problem is that we do not now, nor have we, either individually or as a couple, ever had a Bank of America account. He forwarded it to our IP's scam reporting service. I love to read the scam emails from "Mrs. Mobuto Sese Seiko" or "Director, Camaroon Import Export Control Authority" begging for my help as a fellow Christian. The grammer and syntax mistakes are real howlers.
