A letter to the righties of this world

Dear rightie,

It has come to my attention, that through propoganda from such sources as FOX NEWS and Rush Limbaugh, you believe that you are somehow superior, special, or on some plane "special". As someone with a lifestyle above the realm of average, who has managed to avoid the pitfalls of Republicanism, I thought I would straighten things out a little.

First of all, if you were not born with some ability, be it intelligence, athleticism, or singing ability, that puts you in the 99.7th percentile, your good fortune is most likely due to a series of events beyond your control.

Yes, I realize that you probably find this hard to believe, and maybe it shatters some bloated self-image you have of yourself, but the truth is, if you ARE successful, and your IQ is NOT above 130, chances are, you just got lucky.

Now I know that you will attempt to refute this statement with phrases made popular by our current President like "hard work", but the fact of the matter is, with our current situation, almost no one gets ahead by simple "hard work".

You see, most jobs today have over 100 applicants for one mid-paying position. If you are lucky enough to land one of them, it really does not matter if you work extremely hard, the chances of you being paid more for your services are virtually zero. Simple supply and demand economics state that jobs are in high demand, but low supply; therefore, you will probably find your salary going DOWN each year as other prices increase.

There was a time in this country when additional work COULD result in more success. Overtime, bonuses, etc. were a standard in this country for a job well done. However, your iconic President Reagan effectively killed the unions, and as such, there is now no NEED to compensate you for working hard.

Furthermore, your current President believes in a "global economy". This is a fancy way of saying he believes companies should ship labor out to places where workers work indentured servent hours and environmental laws do not exists. Basically, this makes it impossible for you to compete.

Now I know some of you are old and fat on your good fortunes, and sneer at ideas like fair wages for fair labor because you own a company and like cheap labor. Remember, if you own a company, when no one has any money, no one is able to purchase whatever it is you sell. Have you ever read the story of the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg? Remember what happened to the goose? Learn it, love it, and live it you little entrepreneurs.

Furthermore, there are a certain number of you who have "old" money, so once again, you don't care. Fair enough, but please keep in mind, if you have children or grandchildren, that "old money" can only go so far, and the chances for making "new money" these days are right up there with me winning the Indy 500.

So in closing, please do not feel bad to learn that your success was an accident. Accidents happen...I mean Bush DID become President. Just don't rest on your laurels, because the chickens will come home to roost.

3. Excellent post, DD!
I especially like your line, "Remember, if you own a company, when no one has any money, no one is able to purchase whatever it is you sell." God, I have been saying that for years, and yet so many people still don't get it. Well, I guess they feel that as long as they have WalMart, they'll be okay. I have news for them though -- one day, if things keep going the way they are, even WalMart will start to look like Saks Fifth Avenue for those who have no money.

4. Good details...
I have a question: Your post obviously included many points--and most of them are, more than likely to be correct (many of which we have more than enough facts to establish). But there are many many people in this country who vote Republican that don't run companies and who aren't gifted with 'old money'...

What do you say to the Republicans who are sales clerks, window installers, beauticians, cab drivers, sugar beet farmers, bus drivers, etc. who never thought they were anything more than what they were--and seldom have the chance to run a company or build on 'old money'?

We have to be so terribly careful not to stereotype people and assume we have the inside track on who, and what, they are. It's so easy to paint all the Republicans as straw-chewing-Jethro-fundamental-fanatics... However, I know PLENTY of rightwingers who don't fit that mold at all--and aren't particularly religious in even the slightest way.

When I think about '06 and '08, I think we need to listen to these people and find a way to make our message clear to them; I have a feeling that they are going to be very important in the coming years--and I want us to WIN!
