Nikita Khrushchev, Port of New York, 1950's
My Dad was a Longshoreman at the Port of New York during the 1950's. I can recall as child back sometime in the late 50s, that Khrushchev was coming into the Port of New York to speak at the UN. Why he didn't fly into New York, I don't remember. But at any rate, the dockworkers were outraged. They staged a one day walk out in protest. I can remember my Dad writing his big protest sign on the kitchen table. My Mom was terrified that he was going to get arrested and pleaded with him not to go. Dad refused to listen and told Mom it was his duty as an American Citizen to protest. No, he wasn't arrested, but I think some men were. I could not have been more than about 10 years old at this time, so I don't know if this was the time when Khrushchev made that speech at the UN where he slammed his shoe on the table?

This sale of our ports made me think of this incident from my childhood. What would be my Dad's reaction to this, rest his soul? The Russians had come to speak at the UN. The Russians had not flown 2 planes into buildings within walking distance of where my Dad worked. The Russians had not cut a deal to buy the port where he worked. Yet, he risked arrest to protest a speech at the UN.

Dad did not live to see 9/11. He also did not live to see the day that his beloved ports would be sold for "Blood Money".

We will fight, Dad. We will.

1. Thank you for sharing that HockeyMom. Your Dad
sounds like a great man that had the courage of his convictions. I can see why you are so proud of him. You must miss him so much, especially now with the state of this country.

In peace,

2. Boy! If the ILA was what it was back then, bush would never try to
pull something like this. He wouldn't even dream about it. My dad was a longshoreman too. Port Newark. :hi:

3. Thank you for sharing
that. On another note, I seem to remember that Khrushchev was afraid of flying.

18. But the Prince and the Chimperor are all kissy-kissy,
as witnessed by their "tiptoe thru the tulips" photos holding hands.

10. This country's Founding Fathers are heating up their coffins
Edited on Wed Feb-22-06 08:06 AM by AndyA
From spinning so much! I'm certain they are ANGRY at what they see. The President of the United States pimping America like a common street whore. Selling to the highest bidder that which is not his to sell.

And lazy Americans allowing it to happen. So complacent and selfish that they don't see the writing on the wall, and won't until it's too late. Foolish, foolish Americans. What has happened to our once great country?

Thanks for the story about your Father, HockeyMom. He sounds like he was a brave man who loved his country. What a great guy!

Edit: You'd think I'd use spell checker since it's available, but nooo...

12. Interesting how this has become a meme about * selling out America
right after another big media branding event that sealed Cheney's public image as secretive, dangerous, and perhaps criminal.

It makes me think that the American people are we being prepared for their early retirement. :7

16. You are right on with this...
This is as if our founding fathers allowed our ports to be run by the Brits after the revolutionary war.

If we allow this to happen we will be helping terrorists. period.

It's been well known that the UAE were supporting and funding the Taliban.

So by allowing this country to run our ports, they will be making money off of us, only to turn it around to support radical Islamic groups.

And how am I supposed to feel safe?
