Gallup: 55% Now Call Iraq War a 'Mistake'
Gallup: 55% Now Call Iraq War a 'Mistake'

Published: February 22, 2006 12:30 AM ET

NEW YORK More Americans than nearly ever before now say the war in Iraq is a "mistake" for the United States, according to a new Gallup poll. That figure now stands at 55%, up 4% point since late January. Only once before was the figure higher, at 59%, and that was during the period of overall pessimism right after Hurricane Katrina hit.

Gallup noted that it had asked this question about other wars involving the United States, "and only the Vietnam War engendered more public opposition than the current Iraq War. " The peak opposition to the Vietnam conflict was 61%. That figure for the generally unpopular Korean War was 51%.

When asked to assess the progress of the war, only 31% say the United States and its allies are winning the war – the lowest Gallup has measured to date. "A majority of Americans, 55%, say neither side is winning the war, while just 10% say the insurgents in Iraq are winning," Gallup reports.

The poll questioned exactly 1000 adults across the country this month.

Poll: Bush hasn't made case for Iraq war

More than two-thirds of Americans believe the Bush administration has failed to make its case that a war against Iraq is justified...

Poll: Majority of Americans oppose unilateral action against Iraq

A robust majority of Americans - 83 percent - would support going to war if the United Nations backed the action and it was carried out by a multinational coalition. But without U.N. approval and allies, only about a third of the public would support a war with Iraq.

12. Holy Toledo! I never saw that poll! 83%! I always thought it was 58%
just prior to the invasion--Feb. '03--which I thought was amazing in itself. Nearly 60% of Americans opposed, and still we have to pay for the Bush Cartel's oil war with blood and money (not to mention the Iraqis' payment). Nearly 60%, and still half the Democrats voted for it (and 100% of the Republicans). I was damned proud of the 125 Congresspeople and Senators who opposed--124 MORE than the Vietnam war vote back in the '60s (only 1 opposed). Progress, I thought. Illegal war is not automatic any more.

But my God, 83%! That is staggering. Where has our democracy gone?

Thank you for the stats!

13. One other thought. Gallup polls are always screwy--twisted toward
Republicans, fascim and war. They are generally the outliers, when all other polls are showing the typically progressive, peace and justice American majority on most issues. For GALLUP to come out with a poll saying 55% think the Iraq war was a "mistake" means that the number opposed is much, much higher--and that they could not disguise it.

4. A "mistake"? And, Hitler made a "mistake" when he invaded Poland.
It wasn't a "mistake" it was, and is, a crime.

I didn't see it in the article. I suspect his numbers will nosedive in the next go-round (UAE port deal).

14. Kicked and recommended! All DUers need to be aware of these stats.
They explain it all--they explain what having all the votes tabulated by rightwing Republican-connected electronic voting corporations, using "trade secret," proprietary programming code, with virtually no audit/recount controls, MEANS. Non-transparent elections are NOT elections. They are tyranny!
