I think that Whittington, standing almost at Cheney's shoulder, joked about something that Cheney is sensitive about; and Cheney, his inhibitions loosened by "a beer", momentarily lost it. One minute he was aiming at a quail, he hears Whittington make a sarky remark that is more than flesh and blood can bear, he swings round and bang - happens all the time, narcissistic people with too much alcohol inside them, just takes one word ...
