On A Wing and A Prayer
by FMJ Pacheco
Step into the landscape of war in the sober yet witty memoirs of a fighter pilot and a nurse in the last months of World War II in On A Wing and A Prayer. These war stories recount the inhumanity of war and the crisis of conscience that occurs when duty to country conflict with morality even in the best of causes. It also shows the resiliency of the human spirit and how a sense of humor can pull one out of situations that would destroy most of us. Historically significant and told with a parental familiarity, this is a must-read

I apologize for my lack of sophistication with the use of the internet. Maybe I am too old. I understand that should have come out blue, it just won't.

I do think, best of intentions not with-standing, I'd listen to the guys that went thru war before I'd draw any conclusion. Bush is in deep trouble with them, our greatest generation.

And I know, Bush's worst enemies fought great battles in that war.

Many of us were privledged to hear from our greatest vets. And too many didn't.

They better now. You speak up, at least for them.

Joe - and Gore won that real last election, and I vote for him now!!!

1. Congratulations on your book!
Mind if I post the cover?

Description

The tales of our fathers (and mothers, sometimes) in war may be the most important legacy ever left us. These “war stories” told by our parents on warm summer evenings haunt many of us to this day. They are warnings, a cry in the dark to future generations they may never know. The following pages are the autobiographical accounts of my parents in World War II. My father was a fighter pilot and my mother an evac nurse in the ETO 1944-45. These are the very human accounts of that most inhuman experience.

2. Thank you,

You are good.

I am calling in every goddamn marker I have right now - it is a matter of reason , it really is.

This July, my kid goes back again to that god forsaken country. NO MORE BLOOD.

He already did 13 months and he knows the score here.

You ask, WOULD YOUR FATHERS DO THIS THING?

WE KNOW WHAT OUR FATHER'S SAY!!!

A lot of us know, and we better speak up - RIGHT NOW!!

4. Man, thank you.
I thought about this for a long time - even after I knew it was being publishied.

And it took years.

Those kids in 43 and 44 - they really were just kids. They died just kids, too.

I do understand, the kids that died back then were OUR kids, the kids of America.

I have such a sick feelng now, in the pit of my stomache.

6. You did a difficult thing in writing that book. Now, you have to do
something even more difficult.

YOU MUST KEEP HIM HOME.

You know that situation is completely out of control. You know the Pentagon is being run by corporations. You bear the burden of your awareness -- as we all do.

Keep him home, Joe. Don't let them take him for their homicidal fakery.

You both are in my thoughts and prayers, and I'm not a prayer.

8. He was supposed to go to afghanistan,
I was 100 % behind it.

My Mom, a 2nd lt, a nurse over there (WWII) - and I remember distinctly how fast she got it.

And I look back now, how dumb I really was, and how smart she really was. But she knew what war looked like, the face of it. I read about it, you know.

And I know had Dad died a litle later, my kid wouldn't be in the military to begin with.

It is run on bullshit, you know, the military - I guess I was a little naive - they were officers - and they knew better, a little smarter.

My kid 's name is Troy - I knew a few kid's that died there in Iraq- and I saw they were just kids - shit they really were just kids, so young. We're supposed to be the adults. They are sure dead now. Because these dumb teenagers listened to adults like us??

I do believe there is a greater lesson, and I think we get F so far as a society.

We better be listening to the greater lessons learned by our parents and grandparents about war. Or I think we are screwed.

Joe

11. It is too late now.
It is too late for too many.

Most of our guys don't pull a trigger. Hell, they have my kid hunting bombs on the side of the road - how many CB guys would have considered that a job, right??

I doubt 2 in 10 have ever pulled the trigger of their M16 in a fight.

This is a terrible situation and it is going to get worse, maybe a lot worse.

You ought to talk to the boy, really. It gets so complicated.

He is here the month before he goes back. I will arrange that.

Those kids are NOT pro bush - maybe you will be shocked. Bush is not FDR and this is not Nazi Germany.

13. If that book does well, I give it away in any event.
It is not important.

That story I wrote belongs to a generation, not me. And I know that generation loved FDR and would shit on this "president" in a second. And I knew many of them. And I loved them for the courage they had, what they did for us.

I think something is going down right now. Something bad.

I can't put my finger on it - maybe you can.

Something is going down, though -

Joe

14. The way I see it
If something bad is coming down (which it very well may be), it is only going to pave the way for something Good.

We will get our country back. I have to believe that.

Peace!

15. Peace to you too.
It is the best word - peace.

We do get the country back in the end.

The bastards just stole it for a little while.

I have a sick feeling between now and then we are in in no mans land.

Fortuantely, "then" is in November - just a few months.

Best to you,

Joe
