State's Hughes Says Guantanamo Detainees Treated Humanely

The United States is facing an “unprecedented” situation at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba where many detainees have vowed “to kill as many Americans as possible” as well as others who do not agree with them, a senior State Department official told German television.

Nonetheless, the detainees are being treated humanely, said U.S. Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen Hughes during a February 22 interview on German TV One in Berlin.

The nearly 500 detainees “were caught waging war against my country or supporting Al Qaida,” Hughes said. “It is very difficult to know how to deal with these people, and we have wrestled with this, we have debated this extensively.”

Hughes said a draft United Nations report on detainees in U.S. custody at Guantanamo is “just plain wrong” and that no detainees are tortured. "They are treated very humanely, and those are the orders of the president,” Hughes said. (See related article.)
