Katrina: Coast Guard was great, DHS taking credit, baloney!
The Coast Guard came under DHS after the blivet took office (they had prior to that been under the Dept. of Transportation), but they've been doing their job for years. The USCG 'reacted' and didn't wait for orders to do so. They did what they were trained to do, and not what the FEMA, the blivet, Brownie, Chertoff, or Cheney told them to do.
And that, friends, is why they were so successful.

1. I almost threw up when I heard him say that.
The Coast Guard didn't wait for any frigging DHS command to tell them to get in there. They were in when the winds were still blowing past 50 MPH! In helicopters for crying out loud. That's how it's done. You'd think DHS might learn something from it.

3. Amen! That's how it's done! The sick powers-that-be should take
notes on how to do it right! If the USCG gets too many 'clues' on how to 'get it right', they might not act the same way this coming hurricane season.

10. You'd think they would "learn" , you'd think the whole Bush League bunch
would but unfortunately their heads are too swollen and their vision to tunneled to see anything other then whatever delusions of grandeur and fantasies they have fixated in their narrow little minds.

2. The greatest quote from the Coast Guard Commander
while the Coast Guard swept in and rescued people while other forces were deployed but waiting for orders that never came, was:

"We know what our mission is and no one has to tell us."

Yee haw!!! The Coast Guard totally rocks and always has rocked! 'Cos they know what the mission is and they just go do it.

5. That was and is the point; no one other than the CG can
embrace what they did; they were awesome!

6. First night of Coast Guard Basic
We "double time rout step march" from our barracks to the gym, and sit on the floor - in formation.

CAPT O.R. Smeder steps on the stage - and as one we snap to attention.

After the command "Seats" he begins his welcome with that time honored Coastie "gung ho" statement--

"In this Coast Guard - when you're told to go out in a howling gale
That's all we tell you do - go out in the howling gale
You'll go out -- and if we have succeeded - you'll come back with the person we sent you out to rescue.
But we don't tell you to come back."

8. I've got 4 Coasties in my family who are retired, and two
who recently went through boot camp. One's in aviation, one's in "he doesn't know yet".
I adore them all, and really believe the CG "Acted" when necessary last September; had
nada to do w/ the gov't. The Coast Guard reacted because that's what they do.
The fact that they didn't wait for 'direction' from DHS or FEMA saved many people, so the
idiots trying to paint it otherwise are morans!

7. They did their job. They didn't diminish the people they serve. Glad
that part of the story is coming out. Cause people naturally help people - in an emergency. They just do.

Takes considerable effort to no help. I guess we will never know what was discussed during the 5 hours conference call with DHS.

Good people naturally help people...

People like Bush and KKKarl worry about 'what's in it for them' while people are dying. They worry about what they should wear to lunch, or about selling their Social Security scam. They worry about eating birthday cakes with John McCain.

9. The Coast Guard was on the scene rescuing people right after the storm
subsided as I recall. Kudos to them. They were a light in the darkness of the Fed gov't's response. But then the Coasties saw a need and responded immediately as human decency and their training dictated, unlike the incompetent Bushco cronies in charge of FEMA/DHS management.

Now DHS is trying to take credit for the Coast Guard's immediate response to a dire emergency? Bullshit!
