Indian tribes

Don't believe the garbage.

Kennedy has been a friend of the Indian tribes for a long time

-------------------------------

Story from 2004 about speaking to the Native American Caucus and his positions. If you will note, these positions are totally against everything Abramoff and his gang stand for. The article even mentions he is against Hayworth on issues.

2002 article http://www.indiancountrynews.com/fullstory.cfm?ID=107
The Grand Traverse Band gave $25,000 this year to the Democratic National Committee. But its political money flows to both sides of the aisle. It also donated up to $2,000 to U.S. Rep. Dave Camp, R-Midland and fellow GOP Rep. J.D. Hayworth of Arizona.

Prominent Democrats receiving financial support from the band include Reps. Charles Rangel of New York and Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island.

“As Indian tribes we look far more to the individual and their positions than we look to their party affiliation,” said Frank Ettawageshik, chairman of the Petoskey-based Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. “A good deal of the issues for tribes are really nonpartisan issues.”

Ettawageshik said there’s also growing enthusiasm in his tribe for this year’s elections. He said more members are taking part in tribal elections, and their interest is expanding beyond local politics.

2. It really does take quite an imagination to believe...
... that a Democrat would only support Indians if there was a little bit of cash from a lobbyist, doesn't it?

10. depends on your definition of support
to be frank. I think the growth of legalized gaming in this country is a bad thing. At least when people bet on sports, or racing, it created a whole industry of other jobs, saturation casino gaming just creates misery. notice I said saturation. having casinos near urban areas is a vacuum on the local economy, preying on the weakest.

3. Abramoff and Scanlon worked over the tribes, big time.
That's one of the reasons they were investigated. Now repubs are claiming that, because some of the victims in this scheme donated money to Democrats, those Democrats are now compromised, too. Pfffft!

4. Democrats have long been the
only ones supporting Indian issues. Gaming has added a bit of stink to the whole thing, but let's remember the Wilma Mankiller's of the world not the creeps.

7. thanks, OKNancy
This was what I was trying to get out in my post on Congressional Native American Caucus, which Kennedy co-founded.

14. Repugnican Slash & Burn...Blame The "Injuns"
We hit on this the other night...the native Americans are being set up as bad guys in this fiasco...or that's the game the Repugnicans would love to see. As if it was the Indians that forced Abramoff to do the things he did...or that their "lust" for gambling is what has corrupted them or whatever spin you want to throw. It's basic Southern Strategy 101...when in trouble, find a brown-skinned person to blame or bomb. George Carlin would be proud.

For decades native Americans stood at the mercy of the BIA and other government agencies with little redress. This is like them blaming the Mexicans for the immigration problems rather than the large corporation that hires them for the cheap labor. Or blaming the "insurgent" who happens to live on that land our military is currently occupying. It's conveluted and totally distorts.

My hopes are between the shoddy treatment of all these minorities, the Repugnican party is digging their grave as the minority party in this country for the next 50 years...just like they did in 1932.

Cheers...
