Edited on Thu Feb-23-06 09:35 AM by patcox2
I think calling this racism is unfair, because the visceral response of the majority of the public to the ports deal isn't typical racism, I think its a revulsion against globalization. People are surprised to learn that our ports aren't under the control of US companies to begin with. People are beginning to see the effects of globalization, it means that multinational corporations are the supreme power in the world, that our national sovereignty has been ceded to the highest bidder by the republican agenda of privatization and globalization.

I think this is an opportunity for the democrats to help the majority of americans to see the problems, to see the impact, of these republican policies. This debate should be framed as "see what unrestrained globalization results in?"

1. cspan caller--Indiana proposal to sell toll roads to Argentia or other
I posted this on GD earlier but seems to fit here also.
The caller said she is upset to think the roads might be-sold overseas.

private comapany==I have no idea if this is true.

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels has proposed raising the tolls and entering a long-term lease with a private company to operate the Indiana Toll Road. He says the $2.8 billion or more he hopes a private company would pay for a 50-year or longer lease is the only way to pay for many needed road projects in the state, including upgrading U.S. 31 between South Bend and Indianapolis to Interstate standards.

Opponents of the plan say we shouldn't take 50 years or more worth of lease payments and spend them in 10 years or less. They also question the wisdom of giving over operation of state assets like the Toll Road to private companies. Some northern Indiana critics have also questioned the distribution of the revenue from such a lease, arguing more of it should stay in northern Indiana projects.
