Are we ready for a female President in our country?
This may seem like a redundant question, but it is a serious one. This question came to mind this morning when my child, who has to do a report on one of our Presidents, asked, "why have all the Presidents been men?"

Gee, how to answer that one. My first thought was to say, "well, you see it's like this, our country has a history of bigotry and injustice towards minorities and women..." and then my second thought was to just say, "well, women haven't always had to the right to vote, much less run for office..." Hmm... pretty deep for a young child, especially in the early morning hours.

So, what I finally said was, "we'll discuss it after you get home from school today, but I do think it's time for us to have a woman as President." With that said I found myself questioning my own thoughts. I think a progressive woman with the ability to lead our nation would be the best thing this country has seen in a long time, but I honestly don't think the "laws of history" will allow it--at least not in this decade. (and this is not a Hillary question) Hell, we can't even get them to show "Commander-In--Chief" on a regular basis.

When do you think this country will be ready for a female President? I would love to see one in my life time.

2. Why not, Britian had a female PM
Regardless of her politics, Margaret Thatcher was certainly no slouch or pushover.

19. No, no, I want a woman
Not a female who feels she has to act more macho than the men around her

5. The cowboy mentality won't allow it.
And let's face it, most American men have the cowboy mentality. Why else would so many less progressive and prosperous countries have women in their highest office and not the good ole' USA?

13. maybe a better way to put it is
a non-white male . . . Because all minorities deserve the opportunity - including women.

*I* think a woman would be a better leader but I'm afraid there would be a tremendous backlash from the white male patriarchial supremicists in this country who would just go apesh--.

The fact that they've succeeded in brainwashing their own "wimminfolk" into believing that MEN should be the leaders and that women should just be helpmeets doesn't help matters any. Those infamous "judeo-(so-called)christian values" many say this country was founded upon (it wasn't) are used to justify their male-domination/ego-centric POV.

I think it'll be at least another decade or two. Hopefully in my lifetime. And hopefully whoever it is that is elected will be allowed to finish their term. White supremicists tend to be gun nuts who'll do anything to subjugate others. :(

The UK, Israel, Pakistan, India, the Phillipines and Germany have all elected women leaders. The USA is woefully behind the times . :(

21. Don't forget Chile's President Elect Michelle Bachelet!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelle_Bachelet

Verónica Michelle Bachelet Jeria (born September 29, 1951) is a Chilean Socialist politician and the first woman to be elected president of her country. She won the presidency in a runoff election in 2006, facing center-right billionaire businessman and former senator Sebastián Piñera, obtaining 53.5% of the vote. She campaigned on a platform of continuing Chile's free market policies, while increasing social benefits to help reduce the country's gap between rich and poor, one of the largest in the world. Her presidency will be inaugurated on March 11, 2006.

Bachelet, who served as Health Minister and Defense Minister under President Ricardo Lagos, is a separated mother of three and a self-described agnostic <1>, which sets her apart in a predominantly conservative and Catholic country. She speaks Spanish, English, German, Portuguese, French, and some basic Russian.

I heard her on PBS, what a gal! A survivor of the Pinochet era...

Not given the current "front runners," Condoleezza (sic) Rice and Senator Clinton.

Now if Barbara Boxer had a chance ... . Oh well. One can dream, can't he?
