So - does your Representative/Senator represent you???
Or do they represent big money/lobbyists??? I said over on dailykos and on another thread that if a regular, middle-class person wants to run for anything but the most local of offices, he/she has basically no chance. Only the wealthy/well-connected run, and how can they represent us, when they don't have any of our worries? Oh, yeah, they can say they care about housing or oil prices or credit card debt, but many of them care more about keeping their big business donations and their cushy jobs. I think this applies to many Democrats, and almost all of the Republicans.

And if this is not true, I would appreciate you telling me why else are the middle and lower classes so screwed???

Zach Wamp, Bill Frist and Lamar Alexander. Wamp is a guy who when he was first running in 92 I believe promised his kids wouldn't go to private schools but they do and they live in a real nice neighborhood here. He also promised term limits but has gone way over them. I'm actually surprised Frist is keeping his word about term limits (apparently). I don't hear much of Alexander.

3. No
My rep is Jerry Weller. He's a silverspooner who skated through college and went right into politics. Never had a regular job. He has no idea how to represent normal folks. No empathy at all.

Now, he's married to the daughter (his beard?) of a murderous Guatamalan dictator and the first thing he did was go the state department to influence folks to give his father-in-law (remember he's a mass murderer) permanent asylum in the U.S. That's what dumber-than-dirt Jerry thinks is representing his constituency. It's all about him.

52. I understand that
but I can also list hundreds, if not thousands, of those with wealth/power who don't give a damn about the middle or lower classes.

I think that when you put these rich, connected people into congress, they forget who put them there. That may also happen if you put "regular" people in Congress, but we don't have much evidence for that one way or the other, since it rarely happens anymore.

IMO, Bernie Sanders actually represents his constituency and maybe Ron Paul reflects his district also. Cynthia Mckinney probably belongs in here too.

On edit: I have Kay Bailey Hutchison, John Cornyn & Lamar Smith, so I know about lack of representation!

18. Here in the Evangelical Republic of Ohio...
Sn. Voinovich (R) represents our wealthy fuedal lords and that's about all. Sometimes he cries on TV, but pulls the party line anyway.

Sn. DeWine (R) represents governmental and religious intrusion into private life and our rich owners, but sometimes stuns us by doing something not entirely calculated to screw us. He opposed ANWR drilling, for example.

Rep. Sherrod Brown (D) represents people who actually work for a living, organized labor and the environment and has expressed criticism to the system of legalized bribery that is our political system. He's running for Senate against DeWine which means he has 10 months to live.

26. Thanks - I have been thinking about this a lot
because I was thinking of running, but another candidate had already been somewhat chosen. And I wonder: will this other candidate represent the needs of my district, a district which has a LOT of working poor in upstate NY??? Sweeney, the thug, certainly doesn't, but will a privileged/connected person do so either?? I am not talking about the lesser of two evils, here; I am talking about really, truly, John Conyers-style represent the less fortunate and disenfranchised among us.

I actually have my husband, a disabled NYC fireman (disabled from 9/11) muttering: "I think I have to run for office myself." He is a real love, a very courageous man, yet a pacifist and very concerned about the less fortunate. Another ex-repub like me, who is totally disgusted by the lies we were told for so many years by our representatives and the media.

41. Two "nos" and a "maybe" = Clinton, Kelly, and Schumer
I'm beginning to wonder who Hillary represents, other than her wealthy neighbors. Sue Kelly: RNC hack. She'll be in power forever, because the NY Democratic party can't seem to field a candidate with any traction (working on that in the Take 19 group). Every time she starts looking like a centrist Republican, she drops back into lockstep with the warmongers. Schumer: maybe a little. A little on the hawkish side, but at least he hasn't totally forgotten where he came from. I can tolerate Chuck.

I LOVE THEM. Senator Paul Simon, a man of honor and high repect, was Durbin's mentor. I feel pretty secure in knowing he does the right thing for us. Obama? I can only wait and see. What I've seen so far, he's been OK. I did receive an email reply from him in response to an email I sent him about impeaching Bush. I wasn't very happy with his reply.:( He didn't think impeachment was anything to take lightly, it was a very serious thing to call for impeachment and he didn't see an impeachment in the near future.:grr: WHY NOT?

I wish I would have saved that email. It pissed me off so bad I immediately deleted it.

I wrote off that idiot John Cornyn immediately, and he's lived down to my expectations, a real embarrassment. At one point I had a little hope for Kay Bailey Hutchison, but she started blowjobbing the far right a while back and is getting almost as bad as Cornyn (ominous sign: KBH showing up at the NRA convention in Houston a few months ago to tell anti-French jokes).

At this point I actually have no meaningful representation---everybody from the county commissioners all the way down to the current occupant of the White House are acting contrary to my beliefs. Anybody else feel like they don't have much of a country anymore?
