Wonder how much Fitzgerald had been prepped about this administration before taking the prosecutor job. If Comey talked to Fitzgerald, or intimated in any way that his communications may not be secure, this could be the reason for Fitz's leakproof investigation. If so, it must be driving the administration up a wall.

The top deputy to then-Attorney General John Ashcroft refused two years ago to approve important parts of the secret program that allows domestic eavesdropping without warrants, prompting two leading White House aides to try to win the needed approval from Mr. Ashcroft himself while he was hospitalized after a gall bladder operation, according to officials knowledgeable about the episode.

With Mr. Ashcroft recuperating from gall bladder surgery in March 2004, his deputy, James B. Comey, who was then acting as attorney general, was unwilling to give his certification to crucial aspects of the classified program, as required under the procedures set up by the White House. . .

1. Does anyone have info on Mr. Comey? Sounds like one of the good guys.
Just wondering how he got his position. It's pretty obvious why he's moved on.

2. We will need to bring him back.
The best next president, of either party, may want to consider him for Attorney General. He has proper experience, we may just want Fitzgerald to keep doing what makes him happy, prosecuting at very reasonable public expense.

3. Agreed. Also, Comey would be a great candidate for the federal bench.
In another world from the one currently existing.

4. Nope. I want him making the cases.
Courageous and able prosecutors shouldn't be pushed upstairs. We have a fairly wide number of people who would make excellent judges. This is a more special skill.

But I wouldn't rule it out.

5. According to the NY Times article
Ashcroft was in intensive care. Can you imagine him half consious with Andy Card in the room trying to get him to sign off?

Why do I think that week had a lot more in common with Archibald Cox then the Rethuglicans would like to admit.

8. Well what do ya know!
The headline should read: "Deputy Attorney General refused to sign off on spying on Americans."

Let's see...Friday, we hear the DoJ is planning to investigate who leaked the NSA spying story to the NYT...today we read in the NYT that not everyone at DoJ thought the spying was legal.

This is going to get real interesting. :D
