What really stopped it was 9/11, when it went away pretty much for good.

Also, there was the fact that they finally found her skeletal remains but were unable to link them to the Congressman in question.

These news decisions are made every day. And there has been some further progression on the Aruba case which has some bearing on what the news was today.

NEW YORK - A Dutch teenager questioned in the disappearance of a young Mississippi native in Aruba says he had planned to take her to his house to have sex the night she was last seen, but instead left her alone on a beach.
In an interview with ABC News' "Primetime" to air Thursday, Joran van der Sloot, 18, says he did not have sex with Natalee Holloway because they didn't have a condom. He says they "cuddled for a while" and he last saw her "sitting on the sand by the ocean."

"I should have brought her back to her hotel or I should have made sure I left her with someone, one of her friends, but I just should have gotten her back to where she should have been," he told ABC.

Holloway, 18, was last seen May 30 leaving a bar with van der Sloot and Surinamese brothers Deepak Kalpoe, 21, and Satish Kalpoe, 18. No one has been charged in her disappearance.

In papers filed for a lawsuit in a Manhattan court last week, Holloway's parents allege their intoxicated daughter, who was on a graduation trip with classmates, left a bar with van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers at about 1:30 a.m. Several of Holloway's friends saw her in a car with the youths and asked her to get out, court papers say, but she did not. The court papers go on to allege she was sexually assaulted.

The mother of the girl had him and his father served with a warrant averring wrongful death (civil suit). The warrant was served by Bo Deitl, who is adept at self-promotion. He has been all over TV and Imus talking about it.

ABC ran the interview immediately following their hit program, DANCING WITH THE STARS, which is in semi-final mode and is breaking all ratings expectations. The evening line up is a guaranteed ratings blockbuster for ABC, no doubt challenging those who were torn between NBC's Olympic ice skating and the ABC programming, who lacked either TIVO or a VCR....

I'm as frustrated with the media as anyone else. But the original post was mind-blowing in its insensitivity. Calling that poor girl a "dead hick," indeed. We don't even know for sure that's she's dead (though she almost certainly is). Why does the poster call her a hick? What's the definition of "hick?" Someone from the South?

I'm with the OP in regards to the sensationalism and mindlessness that passes for news coverage in this place and time. But his characterization of young Ms. Holloway was craven and beyond the pale. Even if she was (and I don't know that this is true) a spoiled rich brat from Mountain Brook.
