1. Sales taxes are notoriously regressive |
|
hurting lower income people more than upper income people. Income taxes are progressive, on the other hand.
Doesn't anybody here know about economics 101?

What CTyankee said. This is all about shifting the burden further onto the middle class and poor.

2. More progressive income tax without all the loopholes. |
|
Just make the rich pay their fair share of income taxes. Basically, undo what Reagan and Bush did to push the tax burden onto the backs of the middle class.

Sales taxes give us the worst of the regressive world, just as flat tax does.

7. Yep. I'd say get rid of Social Security tax too. |
|
It is horribly regressive. Just make it part of a progressive income tax and only pay SS to those who need it instead of giving checks to millionaires. Of course, most people over 60 will cry bloody murder if anyone tried to do that.

11. Who you callin' a skinflint? |
|
I'm over 60 and I don't begrudge my tax money going for roads (which I use), municipal services (which I need and use) and for schools which make my community better and stronger.

6. Actuall I beleive in no tax :) - Sales tax will tax consumption |
|
& you will get all your pay up front. Will cut out all the 'rich mans' loop holes. If you are a smart consumer - buy used - this will benefit you. Also, will make corp. pay taxes on what they consume.

Our current system is corrupt and gives the rich and corporate a free ride on our backs.
We need a progressive income tax system tied to the median wage to be assessed yearly in economically stable times, quarterly in times of rapid inflation or deflation.
Nothing else will do. Flat taxes, VATs, and sales taxes will all fall heaviest on the working and middle classes while still giving the rich and the corporate their free ride on our backs.

Tie the very progressive tax rates to multiples of the MINIMUM WAGE. That will make even the right wing Repugs want to raise the minimum wage--by a lot!
No one on DU should support any other alternative offered. The flat tax is the most right wing proposal of all time.
