Sheryl Crow Has Surgery for Breast Cancer
Sheryl Crow underwent surgery for breast cancer earlier this week and the prognosis for a full recovery is excellent, her publicist reported Friday.

The singer-songwriter had the surgery in Los Angeles on Wednesday and is recovering without complications, said Dave Tomberlin, her publicist.

"Her doctors think her prognosis is excellent," Tomberlin said.

...

"More than 10 million Americans are living with cancer, and they demonstrate the ever-increasing possibility of living beyond cancer," Crow said. "I am inspired by the brave women who have faced this battle before me and grateful for the support of family and friends."

Crow's former fiance, cycling champion Lance Armstrong, said in a statement released Friday night that he was devastated to learn the news.

"Once again I'm reminded of just how pervasive this illness is, as it has now touched someone I love deeply," said Armstrong, who is a survivor of testicular cancer.

"Based on my contact in recent days with Sheryl, her doctor and her family, I am confident that she will have a full and complete recovery and the world will be a better place for it," said Armstrong, who asked that Crow's fans keep her "in your thoughts and prayers."

5. Hoping everything goes smoothly with her recovery
She should give Melissa Etheridge a call. They could start their own rock-n-roll women breast cancer support group.

10. It's very bad because of her age
I'm glad the doctors are saying optimistic things, but breast cancer in a woman that young tends to be aggressive and much more likely to recur than in an older woman.

11. Very true
They must have caught it very early to have the docs think lumpectomy and radiation were all that's needed. There was another study recently that showed radiation therapy is very effective in reducing risk of recurrence in early stage bc.

12. It doesn't necessarily have to do with catching it early.

A lot of people think catching it early has everything to do with whether or not it's bad. But it's the pathology that makes the big difference. It's more likely that it's a combination of early detection plus a not-so-bad pathology that has caused her to go with lumpectomy and radiation alone.

Even the tiniest and earliest detected cancers can be horrible if the pathology is bad. You can take them out and chemo them like crazy and they just keep coming back.

It looks as if Crow may be among the fortunate in that sense.

on edit: Also, she's 44. That's not all that young, for those who are concerned about her youth. It's women who get diagnosed in their late teens and early 20s who are most likely to have one of the worse forms. Right off the top, it would seem that that's not a concern in her case, which is a good thing.

14. I wish her a speedy and complete recovery.
That's a sweet statement from Lance Armstrong. It does seem that cancer is pervasive. I hear of a new diagnosis of someone I know practically every week.
