By Reed Irvine and Cliff Kincaid | June 20, 2002
President Bush's exchange with NBC News correspondent David Gregory over anti-American protests in Europe attracted widespread attention. Bush ridiculed the reporter, who asked Bush a question about the protests and then tried to ask French President Chirac a question in French. "The guy memorizes four words, and he plays like he's intercontinental," said Bush. "Sir, if I could just follow," the reporter began. "Thank you," Bush shot back, as he answered the questions and then silenced Gregory. As Bush stepped away from the podium, he called to Gregory.
"As soon as you get in front of a camera, you start showing off."The Washington Times reported that Bush's dressing down of a high-profile correspondent in public showed that the White House is unhappy with press coverage emphasizing splits between Europe and America. New York times columnist Maureen Dowd complained that Bush had a "hissy fit" over "a legitimate question" about European anger with America."

Q (by Gregory) Mr. President, good morning. I have a different question, but I'd like to pin you down on this point about Hamas because I don't think you've completely answered it. Are you ruling out dealing with a Palestinian government comprised, in part, of Hamas?
THE PRESIDENT: Dave, they don't have a government yet, so you're asking me to speculate on what the government will look like. I have made it very clear, however, that a political party that articulates the destruction of Israel as part of its platform is a party with which we will not deal.
Q Okay, can I --
THE PRESIDENT: No, it's --
Q But, sir, I'm sorry --
THE PRESIDENT: Well, it's unfair to the other people.
Q No, I'm just -- I'm just following up --
THE PRESIDENT:
You're trying to hoard. (Laughter.)

the cameras aren't on right now,'" McClellan replied.
"You can do this later.""Don't accuse me of trying to pose to the cameras," the newsman said, his voice rising somewhat. "Don’t be a jerk to me personally when I’m asking you a serious question."
"You don't have to yell," McClellan said.
"I will yell," said Gregory, pointing a finger at McClellan at his dais. "If you want to use that podium to try to take shots at me personally, which I don’t appreciate, then I will raise my voice, because that’s wrong."
