Stephen Hadley/UAE Deal - "There's nothing to reopen."
Feb 25, 2006

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration said Friday it won't reconsider its approval for a United Arab Emirates company to take over significant operations at six U.S. ports. The former head of the Sept. 11 commission said the deal "never should have happened."

Opponents, including the agency that runs New York and New Jersey ports, took their case to court, while the company, Dubai Ports World, stepped up efforts to change the minds of congressional critics.

The president's national security adviser said the White House would keep trying to persuade lawmakers — there's more time since the company offered to delay its takeover — but the administration wouldn't reconsider its approval.

"There are questions raised in the Congress, and what this delay allows is for those questions to be addressed on the Hill,"
Stephen Hadley said. "There's nothing to reopen."

Who elected this traitor to higher office? When did he become the sole arbitrator of US Policy? When is Fitzgerald going to indict this bastard?

1. The polls show Americans overwhelmingly do not want this to happen
So why is Bush still pushing it? I guess he feels like he has nothing to lose, and maybe he doesn't.

If this doesn't cause a civil revolt in the Untied States, nothing will!

2. Think of it as kind of an extended floor vote...
like when Republicans hold House votes open for an hour or two after the deadline so that just enough votes are switched.

4. The only reason Bush has been able to do what he pleases
up until now is because Congress has let him.

If enough repugs in Congress turn against BushCo, then we will have a major showdown and a constitutional crisis the likes of which this country has never seen.

Hang on, turbulent weather ahead.

Frist just hasn't played ball yet, because he is setting himself up for the 2008 campaign. All ready the the chief dittohead has jumped on board... How long before Congress gives in?

I'd like to see them stand up, but it's hard to stand when you have no spine...

7. Strategy - think about what they are doing...
On the one hand bush backs down a wee bit (steps back from VETO stance... okay to review)

On the other hand his spokes folks are repeating again and again "there is no need to review", or "the controversy helps our enemies" (from the Pentagon), in order to enure the public into the belief there is no threat.

Why?

Bushco gets to drag some time out (because he is being "responsive to concerns") - and during that time his folks work to lull the public into a sense of "security" - in order to declare... "We reviewed it - it is safe... " and appear to be still "strong on security" as if some review process was really to happen - when in reality nothing will happen. It has worked for them before - make the news seem like "old news" - and lull the public into a false sense of security. Most recently this worked with the NSA spying leaks.

9. I understand their stategy
that doesn't mean it works anymore.

They really did blow it with this one. Even the dittoheads understand that we have to control our own ports.

12. In late December - I thought this was true
but when they reframed and falsely sold the NSA story - I lost faith. This issue does have the power to prove them wrong - as it hits an emotional level that they have played in terms of demagogic pushing of fear of terrorism to justify ALL of their policies. Time will tell.

13. I bet this isn't the only battle
going on behind the scenes at the WH.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall there, so I could watch them tear each other apart. I love it when monsters eat their own.

BTW: Welcome to DU :hi:
